Carlton urged to change theme song as tune’s racist origins surface

An indigenous activist is campaigning for Carlton to change its theme song because it is set to the tune of “one of the most racist songs of all time”.
Dr Stephen Hagan, who led a successful push to rename ■■■■ cheese, is calling on the Blues to change its theme song, which is set to the tune of Lily of Laguna , a song in which the original lyrics centre on a black man pining after a Native American woman and a song frequently performed in black face.
Speaking to News Corp , Hagan said he was “absolutely shocked” when reportedly told by the club several of its indigenous players, both past and present, backed the club’s stance that its own lyrics “effectively removed the original song’s racist connotations”.
“I’m absolutely shocked they would defend the racist theme song music rather than fight against the clearly racist origins of the melody,” Dr Hagan said.
“It doesn’t make the song any less racist that a couple of Aboriginal players who are very loyal to the club defend it.”
On the song itself, Dr Hagan said Lily of Laguna , “Is one of the most racist of all time with the opening verse including the n-word and ‘■■■■’ and Carlton has adopted that music and propelled it into notoriety.”
“ Lily of Laguna is said to be one of the greats ■■■■ songs ever.”
Asked whether the song needed to be changed given the majority of footy fans and players would recognise the 1989 tune, he said, “How do you think Jewish people would feel if Collingwood’s song was based on propaganda music from the Hitler Youth?”
Dr Hagan stressed that he wasn’t campaigning for the club to change its lyrics, but rather commission a new song to base it on.
Responding to News Corp , a Carlton spokesperson said, “The Lily of Laguna lyrics are of no relevance to the lyrics that were penned in good faith for the club.“
