Season 2021 - Geelong

True I think this is their last crack at a flag.
They have cashed in all hier chips

This is probably their last window of opportunity, this year and next, before the inevitable rebuild. It going to be a really interesting case study. If they win it this year or next, you might find clubs copying them and cashing all their chips in to win now, even if it’s only a small window of being in contention. If you’re Selwood, Danger, Tomahawk, etc, you’d be absolutely stoked that the club is doing everything in their power to give them a change to win, rather than going down a rebuild path. It’s worth a go. It might fail, but it’s better to try and fail than fail to try.

We have been saying it for years but just can’t see it happening for a while yet. Don’t forget when some of these old blokes go they will have cash to burn and can chase guys like Merrett hard. They will find a way to stay around the mark unfortunately

Yep, can milk it for an extra 4-5 years before falling off the cliff.
Geelong too will get to that point but still a few years left in this lot

as a fan base you’d take 4 years more of being competitive in finals over whatever it is we have.

I think they have had their 4 or 5 years. They brought in Dangerfield in his prime. Now they are bringing in the likes of Ablett, Jenkins, Higgins and Smith all past their prime. Cameron is an interesting one but showed nothing last year a s now is injured.

Crows played in a GF in ‘17 - look at them now

This Geelong list is far better than that Adelaide list and Geelong attract good players every year in trade period. Their recruiting is better too. That’s why they’ve never bottomed out in 20 years despite people claiming they will.

By all means bet against them, but until I see evidence something has changed I’d be backing them to be thereabouts again.

Geelong’s list isn’t the problem. Their game plan is ■■■■■. The new rules favour quick movement and they’re painfully slow.

reminiscent of us circa 2011 when we were slingshot and the game showed down.

They’re really not a contender this year. Will probably finish 5th or 6th though

Still too early to say.

Who got subbed off today? Higgins?

Evans. But then Higgins did a hammy

Too early to call.
Some genuine star power to return to the side in Danger and Cameron, and Menegola also.

They will have to tweek this game plan though.
Doubt they won’t get worked out if they attempt to grind out games like this.

They have misread the impact of the new rules. They are attempting to use it to pick out a target. Other teams are using it for run and overlap.

No surprise their old blokes are getting injured. Lucky they have plenty of over 30s so they can rotate them all

It’s odd how sometimes a particular player can entrench a coach into a single, rigid, playing style.
Hawkins has been the focus for all of Scott’s coaching career, and there’s a reasonable argument that has reinforced Geelong’s one dimensional approach, based essentially on hitting up Hawkins.
Be interesting to see if Scott could adapt his game plan if they were to lose Hawkins for an extended time, and replace him with the more mobile Cameron.
