Season 2022 - North Melbourne

Ross the Boss actively sought Brett Peake at St.Kilda. Reckon Stephenson would be fine.

Zac Dawson just spotted hitting the gym. It’s on.

we haven’t won a final for 18 years. i want the first pick as priority pick

I mean it makes sense.

HAND IT OVER

They average 58 points a game, so half way to a Ross Lyon game plan already!

Ross is finished as a coach. Being in the media turns your mind to mush. Ross is borderline incoherent on tv/radio.

This has pretty much been the North plan from the start.

Gut the list, get the highest pick they can (JHF), watch the crap results roll in, obtain the highest pick again (likely pick 1), go cap in hand to the AFL crying poor and begging for a pointy end priority pick.

They’ve clearly done quite a bit lobbying behind the scenes too so it’s not as far fetched as some would like to believe.

There is absolutely no reasonable basis to hand them a priority pick at the top of the first round.

They’ve churned through so many coaches that they now need someone with experience. Lyon would be right in their line of sight after Clarkson says no.

Fundamentally, the decision on whether you think North should get a priority pick comes down to your view on priority picks. Almost no club who is down the bottom with dire performance can’t pin some or a big chunk of the blame on their own past actions. Whether that is topping up and hitting a cliff, poor drafting, poor culture resulting in players leaving for unders, or letting more average players go than they should have kept. Virtually everyone contributes to their position. North is no exception.

The question becomes whether or not you believe in priority picks. Which effectively means, do you believe when a team is bad enough the AFL should help them get out of that faster, or let them them wallow near the bottom for years? I personally believe that every time a team is in that position, making the club “pay”, really hurts the fans who had no control over the situation anyway. Making North or any team spend years at the bottom may be a “just punishment”, but is really just vindictive. A team finishing last only gets two picks nowadays in the top 40 (with F/S, academy, FA compo); its a hard road to rebuild without assistance.

Now, I also think the AFL should choose a middle ground. Bring back automatic priority picks, but dilute their value. I would allow the bottom 6 teams to have priority picks 19-24. So the team finishing 18th has picks #1, #19, #25, the team finishing 13th has picks #6, #24, #30, the team finishing 12th has picks #7, #31, and the team finishing 1st has picks #18 and #42. This removes ambiguity, gives teams the ability to speed up returning up the ladder, but isn’t a huge boost that totally distorts the draft. Outside of maybe fighting for 13th vs. 12th nobody should tank over this. Nowadays usually teams up to 12 are fighting for finals until late in the season, so it shouldn’t be an issue. Doing this would mean this “should they/shouldn’t they” discussion would be removed.

I want Ross to coach again so i can laugh when he gives a backhand to jurnos who ask stupid questions

I don’t mind that idea. Picks 19-24 also hold enough trade currency that they can be leveraged to get something pretty tidy in return.

These carnts folded yet?

Lol.
Imagine if they were semi-competitive and the umps declared war on them like happened to Fitzroy.

What happened with Fitzroy and the umps (before my time)

Well…this.

16 Fitzroy 22 1 21 0 1452 2935 49.5 4

Adelaide v Fitzroy
Round 12, 1991

A few years before their ultimate demise, but just one example.

Also - if you have Kayo - watch The Merger (if it’s still on there).

3 lasting memories of Fitzroy for me.

Beating them in a ripper on a Friday night in 93

Essington turning up in early 1994 at FC Park and getting dicked

Keeping them scoreless at HT at Whitten Oval in 95

Tm Watson’s 300th game. We lost a lot of ■■■■ games like that in ‘94 against also-rans yet beat pretty much every top team…

Yep FC finished 2nd and we beat them twice.
Beat both GF sides
Beat peak mid 90s north

But threw up some right Essington stinkers. Games against Fitzroy, St Kilda and an improving but still pretty average bears (might have been our 1st ever loss to them) the standouts

Such an interesting season 94.

Would’ve been smoked by the eagles in perth under the old 1 vs 8 format had we snuck in so no thank you.
