Mathews was the worst sniper head high
I’m not against it as an idea.
But the reality is the AFL will never do it. Their position would be that (a) intentional acts which cause players to no longer partake in games are relatively infrequent anyway (far more likely to be an accidental act), and (b) there are already strong measures in place (MRO, tribunal, and rules of the game) to disincentivise any acts from occurring.
Every time something like the Nash incident happens this conversation gets raised, and every time it’s met with “not a chance” by the league.
Just asking a dumb question how do say Soccer Umpires say it’s intentional or accidental
The AFL have - over the course of a few decades - backed themselves into a corner where a contest that’s 15cm or 0.01s from perfect is 3 weeks, but a premeditated assault off the ball is 4.
Sometimes even really good contests get weeks.
They really need to get that right first.
Pure thug, Hawthorn’s history is founded on thuggery, Most of their revered players were sniping thugs and they are very proud of this
The payback from S Hocking on Matthews shortly after, was sublime.
Mathews might well be right, but he was a poster boy for thuggery, one of a long line of Dawk thug/mugs, so he can hardly be expected to be taken seriously. His comments aren’t ironic, they are downright and manifestly hypocritical. His own exploits on the field would see his career drastically curtailed if he were playing these days. His thuggery is the reason why l can’t consider him as the greatest player ever. I have always maintained that he was so good he didn’t need to resort to the thuggery. Likewise for Dermie and Dipper, but not Don Scott, the godfather of Dawk thuggery.
