Newcombe, Day and Mackenzie out of the midfield is huge for us, but the Hawks will still find a way to pump us.

They play a game this weekend so even if the ban is upheld, Newcombe will be free to play

Ah, crap!

If you tag Newcombe this year, the Hawks are going to struggle. It will be the first thing every opposition coach looks at.

This Opening Round nonsense is just another way the AFL can manipulate the fixture to benefit their favourites. I had no idea who was playing round 0, but guessed all of the Melbourne teams (FC, Haw, Coll, Gee, WBD - Stk only got a go because they needed another team to fit all of their favourites in).

Also the disadvantage the teams get if they don’t play round 0

We have to play Hawks who would already have a game under their belts

The whole concept is a bloody joke either have every team play round zero or fark it off or just bring rd 1 forward a week

Newcombe gets off on appeal.

JAI NEWCOMBE is free to play in Hawthorn’s Opening Round clash against Greater Western Sydney after successfully getting his one-match ban for rough conduct downgraded.

The star Hawks midfielder escaped with a fine after fronting the AFL Tribunal on Tuesday for a dangerous tackle on Western Bulldogs opponent Ed Richards.

Honestly how hard is it to correctly adjudicate these things?

Feels like every second decision is overturned.

It’s just the usual Hawthorn discount.

This is so “on point”

FFS, they’ve spent the off season tweaking their new system and somehow the two parts of the system are out of alignment at the very first hurdle.

I don’t really care that Newcombe got off…it’s more that the citing operator thinks one thing…and yet the appeals operator thinks another.

Yup.

This is it. The system is cooked.

Honestly, they are rules of a game. If you need lawyers to represent you to interpret and apply those rules to something you’ve done, then the rules are too complex to begin with.

Should be a simple this is the decision, live with it and move on.
