Something seriously wrong with the club (Part 4, August 2024)

This is our GF
Club seems happy to win this every year.
Got to savour those tasty 1 goal wins against West Coast and North

Yeah, other than making some supporters feel better. It won’t make any difference to our performances.

We should beat NM and Richmond.

But I don’t see many, if any, other wins before Rd 16. We’ll be bottom four this year.

Not if we win those games

Up to 7 wins will have us bottom four as an absolute lock, and depending on how the season goes, we could potentially finish 15th with 8 wins.

You don’t think getting a coach who has high standards and will hold players accountable would help performances?

I think Scott does.

The problem is that our player are unable to execute basic skills. You can’t do much as coach, if the players cant kick or handball.

We suck on big grounds in general

Which goes to player development.

Pick Tsatas knowing he is a poor kick. Do some work on it and then don’t pick him because he is a poor kick.
Pick Caddy as a forward but constantly chokes in front of goal and turns straight forward shots at goal into points.
Pick Jones as a forward. No work done on leading patterns, poor kick for goal so we get him to play on the wing where we have better options than him.
Train Shiel as a running half back in the pre-season against the VFL team. Come the real season it doesn’t work so they fold and put him into the middle where Tsatas doesn’t get picked.
McGrath is an absolute liability. It’s too late to develop him, we should be looking to trade him out but who would have him? Too many poor habits.
Perkins looks lost at times. Does he have a defined role? If I was him I would be angling to go to Sydney or Geelong where he would probably be a super star in a winning team.

So yes, the coach has a real problem but he’s had 3 pre-seasons to work on systems, set down expectations and hold the players responsible.

No.

More talent on the list is the only thing that will move the needle in any meaningful way.

His goalkicking isn’t horrible and I think has already gotten a bit better.
His field kicking, though. I think that is a real problem for Caddy.

But he’s 19 and seems to have an enormous work ethic, so I’m not going to say he’ll never fix it. He probably will. But he can only hoof the ball in open play. Any nuanced kicking and it’s shaky at best.

Caddy has kicked 6 goals 8 behinds and has the worst, repeat the worst, goal kicking accuracy on our list. 31.6% accurate is terrible. This is an issue that needs to be worked on asap. Jones is not far behind at 40%.

We should.

But we really shouldn’t.

No. A prerequisite of being drafted at AFL level is that you can execute a handball above a team mates knees, or hit a 25 meter target by foot.

Unless your an Irish player on the Rookie B list, learning to kick properly should not be part of a player development.

I’m not sure how you can argue against this.

You know they attend this thing called ā€œtrainingā€ don’t you?

I did not realise it was that bad. Maybe I’m only recalling the set shots he’s flushed this year.

Ok, well, he needs to work on that too. Need better bang for buck from someone trying to be the centre point of a forward line.

Yeah, to work on a game plan…… not wasting time teaching professionals how to kick.

It’s an absolute waste of coaching resources.

Just get your recruitment correct.

I’m with you on this, recruitment is an absolute key.

There is no point getting your recruitment correct, if the head coach doesn’t know how to use them or develop them properly

Or if your fitness dept can’t keep them on the park.
