Yeah but…it was released in 1967.
So unless you think prog-rock was just invented at that moment out of nothing…
This is so silly.
Nights is so, so, so much closer to Far Side of Crazy than Tom Sawyer or Fanfare, which is where you’re putting it.
It’s different because it’s a genre but there is no connection between Rush and Muse and Nights.
Other than Knights which is Also Western.
Edit: the opening bars of Knights could literally be Nights…
Great song. Just assumed it was English. Thought it was like Route 66 depeche mode
As for western… is that interchangeable with americana?
I would fully tune into a weekly @swoodley and @wimmera1 musical argument podcast.
…for the record, I think its like ‘prog folk’…so I’ll give you both partial points.
I don’t think it is.
I think it’s its own thing.
Anything can be sliced, diced and broken down into this team that flavour…
But for me Country, Western, Americana, Folk and even Blues will always intertwine one way or another in their own musical family genome.
Zydeco most certainly does not get invited to many family functions though. Some would say for very good reason…
I like when wimm and baker hold hands skipping through a field of flowers and colors reminiscing on their 80s songs
OK Wim, which is country and which is western and which is something else:
- Ghost riders in the sky
- Streets of Laredo
- Red right hand
- Theme from Rawhide
- A Tale they won’t Believe
- Ace of spades
I hate genre definition snobs… Big L on a forehead
Oh, I could’ve cheerfully chimed in to discuss Wall of Voodoo too, but I was too busy eating my popcorn and watching Wimm & Swoods lock horns…
It can be a handy tool for discussion. But when it comes down to it, there are only two types of music: Good and Bad…and they are both the most highly subjective of all.
Great band

Seems like the right place to post this, as it is a song, and I hadn’t heard it in years.
Just played this to one of my 7 year olds as I was putting her to bed.
Still stands up. Certified Banger. Needs a 12 inch 8 minute jam out version…possible RSD release.
Swaboozey!
