Just thinking about Australia hottest 100 and Paul Kelly songs I like and this one came to mind.
I never knew the Models had covered Telstar. They did a good job.
I remember them playing it at gigs.
There’s a shortened version on their rather excellent second album ‘Local and/or General’.
Ah ok, I have listened to that album years back but it’s not in my collection.
That and their debut ‘AlphaBravo…’ still sound good today.
The Pleasure Of Your Company remains one of the better Australian 80’s albums. Light years different from their early output of course, but to me it’s a beautiful balance between their arty beginnings and their highly commercial later work. Nick Launay’s production work is awesome - amazing that he managed to make what is mainly drums, keyboards and bass (but used mainly as a melodic instrument rather than traditional underpinning rhythmic bass) - with guitar only sparely used - sound so BIG…
Of course, Models went south after that, and predictably shifted megaunits…
Yeah, the first Models releases never hit me the way other arty/post-punky music from those years sounded, or how “Company” sounded. I know people swear by them though.
From the wonderful ‘Cut Lunch’ 10 inch EP.
