Songs you haven't heard in years (Part 2)

Werenโ€™t these guys ahead of their time (talking about content of lyrics)

Interestingโ€ฆMental As Anything were pretty popular in the late 70s into the early 80s

They had quite a few songs that got a lot of airplayโ€ฆand the one you played was not one of them as far as I remember

And my two faves of theirsโ€ฆ

They were one of many, many Oz bands who made it big with their worst material, but it was hard to begrudge themโ€ฆ theyโ€™d toiled for years as a middling act.

I think thereโ€™s a doco about them which has just been released. And the Oโ€™Doherty brothers are touring a version of MAA for their 50th anniversaryโ€ฆ they are the only original members playing though (Greedy died a few years ago, Martin isnโ€™t well, and Wayne was fired acrimoniously at the time)

Wasnโ€™t born in 70s, basically just listened to what radio station my dad was playing.

A crazy band with 4-5 drummers/percussionists and no guitars. Huge arrival and then just disappeared.

Yeah. Pop bands canโ€™t really take 5 years between albums. People move on.

Compare and contrast to Kim Salmonโ€™s outfit โ€œSalmonโ€. There were eight players in the band, consisting of SIX guitarists and two drummers. They called the sound โ€˜guitarmonyโ€™.

A few thingsโ€ฆ

  • They were quite po-faced and serious in the press, declaring their set-up (no guitars, lots of drums) was going to revolutionise music (narratorโ€™s voice: they didnโ€™t).
  • I seem to recall the singer (Sherine?) earned herself a bit of a reputation as a diva.
  • They pretty much boxed themselves into a corner with said set-up, which they realised and promptly moved away from drums as a focus with the 2nd album which was more dancey (so much for the revolutionโ€ฆ)

I didnโ€™t much like them at the time, but weirdly they sound pretty good now. Breakaway (which I only very recently discovered was a cover) in particular sounds great.

As pre-empted by The Fauves in โ€œEverybodyโ€™s Getting A 3-Piece Togetherโ€โ€ฆ
I remember The Police
Chorus, delay, quirky drumbeat
Quirky three piece, quirky three piece
When did the momentum shift?
Because now three is rock
Three major chords on a Gibson Gold Top
A Neil Young lead break
The A&R men all massturbate
Well, โ– โ– โ– โ–  that I got a plan
Iโ€™m getting fifteen, sixteen, seventeen dudes, man
Itโ€™s gonna be wild
Weโ€™ve all got guitars, Glenn Branca style
Screwdrivers onto the strings
A, double C, G, G-sharp tuning
