Don’t really know this artist but heard this song years ago and tripped over it again recently. To me it sounds a little like Nick Drake playing guitar with Leonard Cohen singing. I like this live version. Anyway I think it’s a brilliant song.

Wow - truly not heard for years. Something incredibly melancholy/resigned about the chord change at ‘deliver the mail’.
Made me look it up. Astonished to read he wrote it intending for Lynyrd Skynyrd to sing it, but that plane crash took that option away. I’d always assumed some kind of animosity between them over ‘Alabama’ , with that direct riposte in ‘Sweet Home Alabama’, but apparently not!
