De novo?
Remember, the person who actually sits at the WADA Foundation Meeting is Andrew Godkin. He is there representing the Minister for Sport/Health. He was present at the Dec 2016 meeting (and many previous ones).
Godkin is the Sport Integrity Advisor in the Dept of Health/National Program Delivery/Population and Sport Division. There is also an Office of Sport headed up by Narelle Smith.
Further to comments from Bigallan and BWAS in Petition thread, it would be interesting to find out who was the 'go between' for the WADA appeal. Was Fitzpatrick calling in a favour from his mate Fahey to save his & Gill's bacon....much bigger chance of this than the EFC34 actually doing PEDs...Would McD., not having gone through this process before, and having been in the job for a year or two, have contacts knowledge and influence to pull this deal off? IMO, I dont think so.
Whomever helped him must have had a great deal of influence in both WADA and the Government, (hmmmâŚnot necessarily Minister Ley, perhaps that why she didnât respond, some else agreed to it?)
They first had to speak to WADA and get them to agree to take this case on at CAS. This is a local sport, indigenous to Australia only. I would imagine itâs a pretty big commitment for any desperately underfunded authority take on. I would assume whomever sold this deal to WADA must have had a lot of influence with them to get them to agree to it in the first place. Further, whoever sold them this deal, must have been pretty confident of the outcome as well. Why bother otherwise?
They then needed to convince the Australian Government that it was a good idea to fund US$100k and provide two ASADA lawyers to WADA, even after the AFL ADT outcome went so badly against ASADA. Again, I would assume this person/people must have a great deal of influence within sports and the government.
Whoever helped McD. had just days (was 30 days the appeal period?) to firm this up with all the parties.

Stavbby - good point.
I actually think McDevitt did his own lobbying. I recall him going overseas to lobby ASADA after the AFLDT handed down its findings and McDevitt announced he would not appeal.
Itâs not so much the lobbying when it comes to WADA, but how much $ you âdonateâ to them.
A pattern starts to emerge:
- Russian Govt donates 300K Euro to WADA in 2013 and WADA stays silent on doping allegations theyâve know about for yearsâŚuntil they are dragged into doing something by a public expose in the German media. Even then, WADA absolved themselves of any responsibility - stating it was up to individual sporting bodies to decide which Russain athletes should be banned and which shouldnât at the next Olympics.
- In 2015, ASADA, after a lobbying trip by its CEO, donates 100K (AUD? USD?) to WADA which decides to appeal a watertight verdict using a recently changed law that allows douible-jeopardy AND removes the need to respond to the original verdict at the same time. How convenient.
Perhaps itâs not new information Hunt needs to start an inquiryâŚmore so joining the âthreadsâ of all the existing facts that lead to different conclusions.
(And he can follow up the âdonationâ trail by asking WADA how Dank can be not guilty under the WADA code of doping EFC players and the EFC players found guilty.)
In all forms of corruption, always follow the money trailâŚ
I dunno about that.
McD. had a lot on the line here. He was relatively new in the job. He lost the AFL ADT case badly, very badly.
Are we to believe he fills out a requisition for USD100k from the federal government to have another go in a foreign jurisdiction, without anyone backing him up or support from very influential sports administration type people? What does he say to the funding requisition clerk when she asks âWTF are you doing Ben?â
He was born in Frankston, so won't be following them in the VFL.Plenty of Essendon fans down that way.
I remember catching a Frankston-line train years ago which goes directly through St Kilda heartland of MoorabbinâŚmore Bomber fans than Saints on the train.
Born in Frankston, moved a bit further down the Peninsula. Not sure whether he has ever been on the Frankston line, maybe not his style.

GodkinâŚhmmmm.
When I googed him, I found this posted in BigFooty sometime in 2014 in relation to a WADA conflict of interest question.
Read with caution; not fact checked:
How about Andrew Godkin:
Seems like WADA had a few mates within the Department of Health.
Wonder what his speech was about at the WADA 4th World conference?

The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) held its 4th World Conference on Doping in Sports from November 12-15, 2013, in Johannesburg, South Africa, where over 1500 participants from the National Anti-Doping Organisations (NADOs), Regional Anti-Doping Organisations (RADOs), the International Olympic Committee (IOC), International Sporting Federations (IFs), Sports Ministers (governments), UNESCO, and the media gathered to hear the presentations and the interventions for the new anti-doping code.
The 4th World Conference was officially declared open by the Minister of Sports, Sports and Recreation of South Africa the Hon. Fikile Mbalula. The 4th World Conference also had the participation of Mr. Thomas Bach, President of the International Olympic Committee, Richard Young (World Anti-Doping Code Drafting Team Draftsman and International Standards for Laboratories), Ulrich Hass (World Anti-Doping Code Drafting Team), and Jean-Paul Costa (World Anti-Doping Code Drafting Team).
Other presenters on the Conference Agenda were Arne Ljungqvist, Vice President of WADA who presented on the Sports Movement Perspective; Hon. The delegates voted unanimously to accept and pass the code. The new code will come into effect on January 1st, 2015. Also presented and accepted by the delegates were the sanctions which include a 4 years suspension for a first offence and the time span for missed tests from 18 months to 12 months.
On Friday November 15, Sir Craig Reddie, the IOC Vice President, was, as a representative of the sport movement was elected President of WADA and His Excellency Mr. M.A. Stofile, a former Executive Committee and Foundation Board Member, who will represent public authorities, was elected WADAâs Vice President.
The 4th world Conference on Doping in Sport was chaired by the out-going President Mr. John Fahey.
^^ No discussion/s on Joint Investigations
The WADA groundwork for joint investigations might have been made in 2013
Media Watch tonight had a good piece on the Daily Mailâs pics and commentary of JH recently. Exposed them as part of the press that live in the gutter, potentially even lower than Fairfux (maybe not, not sure on that).

But at least Paul Barry did call for Hird to be finally left alone after four years of relentless bashing by the media, so kudos to him for that.

Just saw that. Thought it was a pretty soft piece and only really called out one (Sydney?) paper over the fact they didnât name the âmysteryâ woman (his sister) in their 13, yes thatâs 13 photos of Hirdy and her together.
To be fair, Media Watch has never been about in depth exposes. And will never delve any further into the poor reporting (Iâm being kind) that has gone on throughout the saga.
Itâs not rocket science - Once EFC and Hird appealed to the Federal Court against the legality of the Joint Investigation, ASADA and WADA would always attempt to take the matter further - These type of organisations HATE when athletes take legal action - Combine that with the Liberal Party having scores to settle with Demetriou, and you have a perfect storm. Itâs obvious that ultimate approval for the 100K donation to WADA came from Ley.

"James Hird and the âfemale friendâ
The Daily Mail caught James and a âfemale friendâ out and about, but this was no friend.
And finally tonight to a former sports star caught in the media gaze.
And Iâm not talking about Grant Hackett and his painful public struggle.
James Hird of Essendon fame and infamy was also back in the spotlight earlier this month â and while The Australian had him on the front page, it was the Daily Mail, again, who really went to town.
A slim and smiling James Hird leaves his home in Melbourne to go for a coffee with a friend at a local cafe as the AFL legend is seen for the first time since his drug overdose
â: The Daily Mail, 9 February, 2017
The Daily Mail, which has an insatiable thirst for celebrity tales posted no less than 13 photos of Hird walking near his house, most of them with this mystery woman.
The former Essendon AFL coach looked trim as he left his family home in Melbourneâs upmarket Toorak with a female friend
â: The Daily Mail, 9 February, 2017
A female friend, eh? So who could it be? Well, as the Daily Mail told us, it was not his wife.
Hirdâs wife Tania, who has remained tight-lipped about his overdose except to ask the media for privacy, was not pictured as the pair caught up
â: The Daily Mail, 9 February, 2017
Yes, theyâre clearly close. And are you thinking what Iâm thinking?
Well, donât, because that is not his lover.
As a furious Hird family member told us:
If it is so important that Jamesâ companion must appear in 13 photographs, surely the public has the right to her being named as his sister so there is no doubt about details of Jamesâ personal life.
â: Hirdâs Family Member, 12 February, 2017
Yes, itâs Hirdâs sister Amilia. As the Mail could have discovered.
And after all that James Hird and his family has been through over the last four years, surely itâs time anyway to give the guy a break.
James has paid an enormous penalty, he has suffered illness that has threatened to kill him. His family has endured years of their life being considered public property. There is little that should be of any interest left for the public. The Hird family is entitled to retreat to a private life and protect itself from invasion of privacy.
â: Hirdâs Family Member, 12 February, 2017
We agree. And especially protection from nasty suggestive stories like that."
