I’m not an expert, but shouldn’t the thrust be vertical?
Efficiency is the short answer.
Ah…
I was shitposting about the apparent horizontal exhaust in the photo, rather than the angle.
Yes, to increase the efficiency of delta V (acceleration) gained from the fuel payload, launching vertically is optimal. Later, the trajectory will curve so the rocket/rocket’s upper stages/payload can reach escape velocity from Earth’s Gravity well.
This was a test flight to 100km.
That is propellant at cryogenic temperature bleeding off through an overflow valve
Tyson is a really good science communicator. Given as he is the head of the Natural History Museum in NY.
Coverage is pretty cool. Getting to see all the prep of the astronauts. Currently entering the capsule and getting strapping in. Feel so nervous for them considering they are going into space on a Boeing product.
And scrubbed. Vibrations during LOX top up loading apparently.
Boeing + Space Launch = what possibly could go wrong?
Mid June hopefully and will be live streamed which will be cool.
Meanwhile Starliner delayed until the 17th at least as they are replacing the faulty LOX valve.
What the hell did I just see above my house!
Like a chain of lights moving in one direction.
That was unexpected.
That’s the Starlink satellite.
Just watched a little video on them. Always thought they just threw one up at a time. These bad boys are thrown out like a deck of cards! Haha amazing, I had no idea.
It’s a pretty amazing sight.
No its not. Messes up my photography.
