State of the game

Yesterday’s dogs v dons was the fist game i have been to in 3 years. Yes it was a close finish, Yes it was one of the best individual performances i have seen, Yes we won, but guess what, I won’t be paying $25 to watch that crap any time soon.

As a spectacle, the game is no longer something i enjoy, in fact that was the worst game of footy that I have ever had the displeasure to watch.

Watching the game on TV does not give justice to how poor a spectacle the game really is…watching exciting players bursting out of the back line, taking one bounce, then two, only to look up and see no one ahead of them! What do they do next, they stop and look sideways for a short option…!!!

I know that winning is everything and that I will be as happy as the next supporter when we win, but i and others will quickly lose interest in the game i have loved for so many years, if they don’t do something about the way it is currently played.

If the AFL want to truly know why crowd numbers are down, just watch yesterday’s game…pathetic!

So, 1 year on, are we enjoying watching games of football still?

Loving the fact that we are scoring 6 goals for the match. How about we try something different and play a forward line?

Haven’t watched a full non Essendon game since the 2012 GF. Don’t care really.

Local footy is of far more interest that the AFL as a whole.

Buddy could have been the greatest ever if the game didn’t become this flooding crap. We will never see another100 goal season by an individual. 80 is the new 100.

Our football is just form, confidence and belief.

Overall AFL has become obsessed with defence, and I believe it’s partly down to interpretation of the rules. The current rule interpretations favour the defender /tackler over the ball player. They also stop play to pay a free or create a stoppage when they don’t have to.

My pet hate is the implementation of “prior opportunity”. This was intended to award the perfect tackle. It now rewards any half tackle at the expense of the player trying to make something happen.

If you reward people for laying hands on someone trying to baulk an opponent, or even worse for knocking the ball free, why would anyone try and take on an opponent.

Watch that clip of all our goals from the elimination final in 2000. The ball is knocked free in a tackle 10 times. “play on”. These days that’s a free. And while the free is being paid the opposition is flooding back to stop the opponent moving the ball on.

And we wonder why the game is lacking excitement. They’ve legislated excitement out of the game to such a degree that a tackle is now a highlight and that players are measured in “pressure acts” rather than goals. FFS.

(probably a contributing factor to benftis thread)

(The conspiracist in me might think it was a deliberate decision to increase appeal to the northern states, but really I don’t believe the AFL management is capable of understanding the consequences of their actions enough to do that)

Hmmm. I think that what you say is pretty right. Watching the game at the moment is incredibly frustrating . As I stated in another thread the game is becoming increasingly hybridised ; look at how often there have only been less than 10 goals scored by half time. I’m waiting for the day we have a 0-0 scoreline . I personally think the '80’s - '90’s were the most enjoyable football that I watched but maybe looking back with rose coloured glasses. Might have to look at the Grannies from that time before I comment further.

The says of having 2 good key forwards try and win the game for the team is over.
In nineties the headline would be ablett v salmon, or Lockett v Dunstall.

These days it’s selwood v Watson, Parker v hodge etc.

And buddy is double teamed. Plus plays against zone defence.

This place isn’t a blog, you know.

i liked it

Usually played in Victoria.

Umm it was fine. Somebody may be drunk..

Sorry bout the duplicate, connection issues

You’re kidding right? Final scores were 101-94 and a full forward dominated the game. You sure you weren’t watching a different game?

I endured both the Melbourne and St.kilda games, if you want garbage football give those two a watch.

So you witnessed one of the best and thrilling games of the season and a KPF kicking over 4 goals (don’t see that much now! ) and you’re complaining??

What. The. Fark.

As I said, first game in 3 years. TV does not show the true state of the game. Maybe your used to it, but I was ready to pack up at quarter time.

Jake was the only reason i stayed. Rest of the game was rubbish

Clone_Hirdy isn't comparing yesterday's game with other games this year, he/she is referring to the way the game was played several years ago.

I disagree with you by the way, Clone_Hirdy ... but I know lots of people who do agree. The game is certainly different. And some matches have way too many stoppages and not enough contested ball.

But I thought Sunday's game was a cracker. I reckon it would have held up in any era. The point you made about players looking up and seeing nobody up forward is valid, but that can actually add to the excitement. Like when a player takes it all the way in to goal or when, like Zerrett against Adelaide the player stops and doubles back and looks for other ways forward.

Anyway - it's all in the eye of the beholder.

I get to perhaps one game a year.

I was lucky enough that yesterday’s game was that one game.

Wow.

I felt privileged watching Jake Carlisle do things that few can do

I felt privileged watching Dyson Heppell pick himself and the team up in the last quarter and say we are not going to loose this.

I felt privileged listening to the lovely lady behind me count down the seconds to the point when we knew we would win.

I felt privileged sitting with two passionate Essendon supporters and sharing this amazing game with them.

Seriously…you guys that live in Melbourne…and have access to this week in and week out…need a reality check.

I would give anything to be able to support our boys every week.

Back in my day, the music was better, the movies were better, kids were more respectful and footy was much, much better.

Hindsight and nostalgia are special places.

This guy.
