A suburban footballer has left an opponent with a broken jaw - leading to a 36-week suspension from the league tribunal.
Keilor’s Leigh Burke copped the ban at an Essendon District Football League tribunal hearing last night investigating a match against Essendon Doutta Stars on August 6.
VFL big man Simon Clarke was attempting to break up a fight when he was hit from behind, as reported by The Herald Sun.
Clarke’s jaw was broken in three places and the 34-year-old is unexpected to play football again.
EDFL general manager Marc Turri said the tribunal hearing was adequately harsh.
“I don’t want to talk about the incident itself per se, but more generally speaking I think it’s a reflection that we don’t want to see unsportsmanlike behaviour on the football field, particularly conduct that’s going to injure another player,” Turri said.
“I think it was a very strong message from the EDFL and from the tribunal panel to say that we’re not going to condone behaviour that’s going to put at risk the welfare of another player.”
The AFL’s National Deregistration Policy states that players who accumulate 16 weeks of suspension across their playing careers will be deregistered - meaning Burke faces a lifetime ban.
Anyone who belts a bloke in this manner should fkn obviously be banned for life from all sorts of football (and all other competitive sports). How could anyone even argue otherwise?

Neville Bruns did deserve several severe smacks to the head though, for all his nefarious acts.
