Syd could not get more lucky with fluke kicks in that last 4 minutes of play, us not getting one lucky bounce and thereās the typical quick play-on calls Essendon seem to receive.

Centre Bounce - TBC gets slight tap our way, Swans17 running in from CHB gets to the ball first and gets a quick kick forward. His opponent, Raz is late to the contest (he is half-forward but at centre bounces is playing closer to wing which has worked for us so far this quarter.)
Ball lands 30m out to a pack of 6 players, Hurley in front nearly takes mark but the ball is ripped out of his hands by Syd16 from behind who claims the mark. Ball up 30m out.
Syd16 takes Gleeson back to square. Hurley mans up Syd20. TBC gets a left hand tap going our way. Syd29 running away from goals gives a quick short hb to Franklin who fumbles but gets a quick fast scrambling kick 20m forward that Syd16 almost marks 25m out.
Both Gleeson and Rohan scramble for the loose ball, Syd16 lands in Gleesonās back as it rolls away.
The ball rolls out to Syd13 who kicks the ball off the ground. The ball sneaks through within a foot from the goalpost for goal as McGrath tries to smother it.
Goal review correctly decides a goal.

Centre Bounce. TBC gets a short tap forward that is sharked by Syd12 and is immediately tackled to ground by Jobe. The ball spills free towards our left half forward.
Green gathers and tries to turn and kick but is immediately dispossessed by Syd.
The ball spills free and continues to bounce towards our half forward over the centre square line with Raz leading the chase.
The ball bounces away to a following Stewart within our 50m line with Tippa next to him.
Stewart picks up, rotates and tries to dish off inside to Tippa whilst being tackled.
The ball spills free and Syd24 just gets to ball in front of tippa, coming the other way. A bounce the other way and Tippa is free to goal.
Syd24 taps the ball forward, gathers and turns and handballs backwards to Syd39 whilst being tackled by Stewart.
Syd39 facing forward has space to handball over the top of the arriving Green and Tippa to space at the half back centre square for Syd4 to run onto. The ball doesnt quite sit for Syd4 and as he picks up the ball, Goddard having held off, applies a strong tackle that causes Syd4 to spill a rushed handball forward.
Tippa gets low to get to the spilt ball first and gets a free for too high against Syd 28.
Tippa just forward of our centre right wing, immediately kicks it 30m backwards to a loose Hurley just behind centre right wing within the square. 3:57
Hurley immediately kicks it laterally out wide 30m to Daniher who is 25m inside boundary right half back.
Daniher slows the play down, ignoring Hurley and Zerrett who are 25m inside and behind him and on their own.
Zerrett points to kick it to Hurley. Bags has space on the opposite wing if Hurley is used.
Daniher kicks it 45m to a pack 25m within the boundary line to our half forward right flank.
Syd39 blocks the run of TBC to mark the ball and is rightfully penalised.
Colyer picks up the rolling ball over the top of the pack but is not given advantage running into goal from 30m out. 3:24
TBC kicks to within 20m to the right of our goal. Somehow, once again, none of our talls get to the drop of the ball.
Syd defender almost marks it uncontested but for the late spoil by Raz.
The tapped ball lands in the lap of Syd14 who turns around and whilst tackled, rushes a 25m kick forward that lands in the lap of Syd44 45m out from our goal.
Syd44 quickly turns around and, as Colyer tackles, gets a kick away that lands just past the centre circle.
The ball goes over the head of Gleeson and Rohan who both turn around to chase the ball. The ball bounces up for Gleeson to tap it back 3m to Hurley.
Hurley facing our way, gives off a quick handball to JD going our way and immediately runs off looking for the 1-2.
JD gathers, turns around, and gives it back to Hurley who upon steadying to kick is tackled by Syd23 coming the other way.
Dropping the ball is correctly called. Syd23 has it at our right centre wing on the centre square line.
Syd23 goes to quickly kick, fakes, gets into a little trouble and then kicks down the line to Syd26 who marks uncontested on the left forward flank 45m out. Gleeson slips over changing direction trying to man him up but still probably wouldnāt have reached him in time.
McKenna is on the mark 45m out yelling and pointing at someone to pick up Syd23 who is nearby Syd26.
Of the closest players, Goddard is running away from mark, working back to fill space 30m out and JD has hands on knees
35m out, inside the mark. Syd24 and Syd28 are also both on their own to the left of Syd26.
Syd23 runs from behind, gets the handball receive and bombs long at goal from 55m out with no-one around him.
It is close to being a goal with Syd9 and Kelly both wrestling on the goal line.
Kelly at maximum stretch and high interference gets a finger tip to the ball prior to it crossing the line. A correct call of touched is decided.

The ball spills forward, Zerrett tries to gather but knocks it onto Syd23 foot and rolls over boundary line, just outside 50m.

With very little movement downfield, Hurley kicks the ball in down the line to the wing. Once again not close to the boundary. Bags couldāve been an option at CHB as Connor draws a player, but Hurley doesnāt risk it.
Syd39 takes a good pack mark and dishes off a handball to Syd15 who kicks to CHF. The ball falls off from the pack away from the Syd goal to 50m line. A Syd player fumbles the ground ball out to Jobe who picks it up and flicks the ball to the ground.
Raz gets a toepoke to the ball off the ground in amongst a group of players.
Syd14 stops the ball getting out the back to Tippa who wouldāve been away. Syd14 kicks the ball around his body to CHF 30m out from Syd goal. Hurley all alone takes the mark. 1:56

JDās kick is nearly smothered as he kicks it down the line to 60m out. Pack flies and Benny collects the ball and is immediately tackled. Benny is spun while trying to handball the ball out. It comes out boundary side as Conor is distracted, Syd12 gathers the lose ball and kicks the ball to the pocket, almost being smothered by Gleeson.
JD fails to get fist on the ball over the boundary, the ball falls to ground bounces straight back up into Syd24 hands, he ducks under a tackle and snaps a left foot goal from 10m out.

Zerrett uses his body strength and pushes his opponent off the falling ball. He gathers and quickly kicks the ball forward to CHF. Raz is one against two and is well blocked from contesting the mark. Syd39 marks uncontested at CHB.
Syd39 kicks 25m forward to unmarked Syd player, defensive side of centre circle. He immediately kicks forward to CHF 40m out from Syd goal. JD flies across in front of pack for a strong mark. 0:59
JD motions for players to spread wide to boundary line for the kick. Called to playon at 0:49 and is almost tackled by Syd23.
TB and Tippa are boundary side of their opponents on wing but the kick is too central and advantages Tippas opponent Syd14.
Syd14 takes a chest mark behind Tippa and immediately gives a short handball to Syd35 facing the wrong direction.
Syd35 turns around and steadies to kick long just as Tippa knocks him slightly off balance affecting the length of his kick, resulting in a tumble punt that Syd23 takes with a strong contested mark at CHF inside the centre square.
Hartley falls to the ground, allowing Syd23 to run off have a ping from 60m out which hooks right for a point.

Syd24 gets a quick mongrel 20m kick forward under pressure that drops over the top to the perfect distance to the contest between Gleeson and Syd16. Gleeson playing in front somehow is wrestled behind and Syd16 takes a contested chest mark.

For what itās worth, you call 19 Essendon players in this, for their efforts.
only guys missed were two guys whoāve spent more than a month in the VFL, (a 29 gamer and a last gamer), and one other.
Iāll say it again, as a club captain, Dyson Heppell is a very good player.

Iāve decided Iām happiest in the denial stage. Iām just pretending I donāt know the specifics, so in my mind we flew to Sydney vs a decent team in form, a ground that doesnāt really suit our game, and a ground where we havenāt done well In the past.
The boys played a spirited game and fell 1 point short.
