Talls in the 1984-85 era

Wallis didn’t get a full first dozen seasons… Blitz would have written him off a hundred times over that period.

Yeah, when Wally wasn’t belting guys in grand finals, he was mostly rehabbing hamstring strains.

Dean Wallis was a tough hard player, and was not as skilled Roger Merrett, but was not a thug. He used his body, not his fist or forearm.

No.

Well, apart from being one of Sheedy’s notorious favourites.

Brad Green might disagree if he didn’t have a fractured larynx!

That was just a little love tap, and Deano was not behind him.

I shouldn’t be so harsh on Roger the Dodger, but I did see him do some horrific stuff on the footy field. I actually got into a fight at VFL park during a Bombers vs Fitzroy elimination final when Roger charged through a very small Fitzroy bloke and nearly killed him. Two Lions supporters in front of me took exception and I disagreed with them, which ended up with us all being escorted from the ground. Guess I am still grumpy at missing another Bomber final loss, at least I won the fight.

One of the best things about Wallis was that he (replete with his less common spelling) arrived with Barnes at the Bombers in the same year. Anyone with a passing interest in WW2 aviation was at least slightly amused. Although the dam didn’t exactly burst with premierships, Wally did get two; the prodigal Barnes was in one of them.

Personally I didn’t think Wallis was that good, was really lucky to play in 93, although did justify his selection with some tough stuff. Late in his career earnt his spot but still used to do some really dumb stuff. Fraser Brown take on the tackler kinda stuff.
