if its a league-wide thing, then its pretty obvious clubs don’t care about the level of ball skills. otherwise they’d work on them at training and improve them.
players don’t arrive at afl clubs fully formed

You must not be happy with the tassie election result, 70% of voters voted for parties that want the roofed stadium and the government improved their share.
That was always going to be the case. Might surprise you to know people vote on other issues over sports barns. Also not relevant to my post.
I loved it that the Devils distributed that pamphlet on why players should come to Tassie, to all the player managers. I think in in it was it is the coldest and has the worst winters in Australia, the place is dead set boring, and the locals are in inbreeds (my apologies to any Tassie members of Blitz).
On popular vote? Sure.
In actual seats? Looks unlikely at this stage - maybe in Lyons, but it seems SFF are better placed for the seventh seat there. Labor might gain a seat (seventh seat in Bass) compared to pre-election.
But it’s not the lower house which is the issue. Both LAB and LIB are in favour of the stadium. It’s the upper house where there is going to be enormous issues as IND + GRN hold 9 out of 15 seats.
Add: I want the team and the stadium to happen. So I’m hoping whatever issues exist get overcome.
I was still told very recently that the AFL is still considering letting players be FIFO. Live and train in Melbourne and fly in to Tassie for the weekend and then back out again as they are massively concerned about getting quality players to head down there.
It seems unrealistic. Hobart feels more like a place you might settle down in, visit for festivals and wilderness, artsy stuff, food. For 18-25 year olds who could have it all on a platter it’s not exactly Gomorrah or Eden. And if they do fifo it’s just an obscene joke. Farking mess all round, can it.
I bet if the vote went the other way though you’d be claiming it. Before the election it was being called a referendum on the stadium. If people were passionately enough opposed to it, surely pro stadium parties wouldn’t have gotten 70% of the vote. Good to see there is some common sense down there after all.
If the AFL are actually considering that as a feasible option, why not save everyone the heartache and say “nahh, this ain’t going to work, no team”.
Because that model is not sustainable. Ever.
This person did admit that it would just be for the first couple of years to try and tempt some quality players down there. He did mention that some talks had already taken place with some players about options and another option is to offer a COLA type “bonus” or sign on fee that would be outside the salary cap and in the order of $200k per year they sign on for. The AFL wants to ensure that Tassie are competitive from the outset
Except for the club to be self-sustaining, those first few years really need all hands on deck. Players going to junior footy sessions, open training sessions etc. That becomes really hard under a FIFO model and people will lose interest.
I’d be fine with a COLA type arrangement, though.
Mate not sure what your boner for the stadium is all about but you seem pretty vindictive about the whole thing. The vote ‘going the other way’ would’ve meant the Greens got in with a few indies which was never going to happen. Both majors are pro stadium. I’m glad it’s all going awesomely for you though, whatever hamlet of common sense you inhabit, and I hope we end up with a few of the kids who exodus the Devils in time for our next tilt in 2038.
In 2023 according to Dwayne “give it some shoe” Russell
Tasmania to be AFL's 19th team in 2023, according to Russell
Not vindictive at all, i just don’t understand so called footy fans in Tasmania not wanting a stadium which therefore means no team, when it was the states own taskforce who were the ones that said they need a new inner city stadium with a roof, before it even went to the afl. It’s been an absolute mess, which has ruined the hype around the whole thing, mostly due to people with no idea what’s going on and what the recommendations, funding, agreements and benefits are.
Edit: sorry quoted the wrong post that was in response to loflyer.

You’re absolutely right, but I think the real value for Tasmanians in general comes from having a club with a $13m+ per year salary paid to people living in Tasmania.
I think there’s plenty of support for a team but there’s plenty against and two commissioned reviews that call it an unrealistic and potentially disastrous ‘investment’, the stadium, in a state that’s already facing enormous issues. It’s all been covered here already. A state task force isn’t the footy fans or the non footy fans, it’s a hand picked group with a buttoned down agenda. Blaming the population for the gamesmanship of the govt and afl is bullshit. I reckon it’ll go ahead and it’ll be officially great and intrinsically terrible. But that’s progress, and lots of people will make money out of it like they do out of gambling there. A lot of them will be on the mainland
Got to agree. We already have that anyway with dorks and gorth.

geelong’s got about as much going on as hobart, and they have little trouble getting players to live there
young people leave tasmania because there’s fk all employment prospects, not because they want to go to the sporting globe
Geelong’s an uber from Melbourne, has surfing (and farming for 11 goal forwards) along the coast and just isn’t as isolated. Plus the chance to play finals virtually assured for the recent decade is a big enticement. Don’t get me wrong, I reckon Hobart has a fark tonne more going for it than the likes of GC, and Geelong as a place in general, but I don’t entirely mis-remember being young and what sort of culture you want to be among. But I also don’t really know what young blokes these days might want either so there’s also the possibility that they might want fresh air, a poo machine, and scallop pies on tap.

And yes, agree. The uni is one of the most corrupt in the land and there’s slim pickings for traditional employment for sure. Just more reasons why I don’t think it’s really viable. Ballarat or Bendigo would be in the discussion if it were about just adding another team. Actually Bendigo Bombers has a very nice ring.

This is the problem.
Hobart is significantly impacted in this regard, by the very fact that such a large proportion of young Tassies leave and the demographic problem that leaves behind.
This impacts greatly on some of the things that are EXTREMELY important to a young footballer.
This isn’t as much of an issue on GC (in fact, the opposite) or the Surf Coast.
