Thanking Bomber Thompson

What a crack up. Club treats Bomber poorly, he whinges, everyone here tells him to shut the fark up, harden the fark up, cop it on the chin and move on. Maybe follow your own advice girls. The guy is an Essendon premiership player, a Champion of Essendon, a member of the Team of the Century, he is angry, and hurt by this, and he is not allowed to react badly. You are just invested bystanders, but you are somehow allowed to react badly. So typical of this place. I don’t like it much either, but the guy is not a robot, he has emotions. If you can go off, so can he. Move along.

QFT

How about everyone wait and see the context of what Bomber says before shooting him?

To be fair to Bomber, I remember when he was still involved at the Cats, him being asked whether he considered himself to be more of a Geelong or Essendon person at that stage and without hesitation he answered Geelong.

At least he’s been consistent and honest about that issue and probably feels his achievements as a coach hold, for himself at least, more pride than what he achieved as a player. I can live with that and probably understand his feelings there.

I always thought that speech at the B & F was saying goodbye to the club because he thought he had the Gold Coast job.

AFL then shafted him.

Heard Sheehan on SEN this morning and he hinted that this maybe is his real gripe - with AFL not EFC.

I love the joy Bomber brought in our darkest hours as a club. “sore ankle ankle sore…MMMMMMMM…Roger” he made me laugh in his pressers and ofter would speak about the club very well DURING the saga. So for putting his hand up to coach us and represent us on the frontline. I thank him.

If he wants to talk about what happened then let him. It would be good to hear what someone says whats been going on.

“Hurt by this”

By what?

That the one year job he took was actually only one year long?

From my perspective it seems he’s more bitter about not getting his way, than anything to do with the ‘sorry saga’. And I would’ve thought the club that supported him – not the league that fined him or media that tried to ruin him – would be the last group he should be bitter towards.

Didn’t substance abuse rumors shaft him? Where are they supposed to have originated from?

I would be pretty ■■■■■■ to if I was told I had the job then didn't.

Just read the HS article and I didn’t think there was much that Bomber said that was bad. Sure people will use to attack Essendon but I don’t think he was particularly doing that. Just came acorss as a guy who was burnt out by the whole thing and the way the club behaved (which we should all be honest and agree with with).

Agree. Sheedy sees himself as EFC despite all he achieved at Richmond as a player. Paralells.

Bomber now trying to rewrite history and suggest he was ‘against’ the supplement program from the start. Ummmmm what? Revisionism there. Key facts: Bomber supported Weapon appointment, weapon then suggested Dank which was run through coaching department. At that stage everyone was on board with hearing what Dank had to say. Reid was most hesitant. Thompson didn’t say boo initially.

Then the injections started and some other stuff happened and Thompson SUPPORTED Reids letter to Danny to bring the program into line. Hird was also told and ALSO supported better guidelines… and that was when the infamous “must be safe, legal and Dr approved” email was circulated.

The program then continued for a time. Then Thompson, Reid AND Hird all approached the club to consider dropping Weapon because of the injury toll. They were told no, reportedly due to financial concerns. After some discussion, the already radically reduced injection program was discontinued all together.

There is ZERO record that Thompson actively pursued stopping the program any more than supporting Reid at times, and reporting concerns to management. Nor did he make ANY complaints before the program started. Considering he was meant to be the ‘senior’ man and mentor to the haed coach, how does this happen??

Thompson was ‘equally’ to blame for all this and yet he got a slap on the wrist fine while Hirdy has had his entire career thrown in the toilet, his house and family trolled relentlessly, given a 12 month suspension only to come back and find that his head was STILL required to be the sacrificial offering on the table. And now Thompson wants to have a cry about the club changing their minds?

Ironically Tim Watson always wanted Bomber for the senior role back when the ‘dream team’ was assembled, and it was Bomber who declined in favour of the mentoring role. At the time he claimed he was burnt out from Geelong, and fair enough too. Rumours are that it was again Tim Watson that heavily favoured Bomber remaining as coach and was behind the ‘push’ last year. Apparently Bomber was hesitant because he had been told that Gold Coast were interested and he wanted to see BOTH offers. Then the player backlash started, the fan backlash started and the club started to implode on itself in the worst two week period of the entire saga and luckily the board came to its senses and ‘reversed’ the almost decision. Hird was retained and at the same time, according to rumours, Gold Coast went cold on Thompson after GAJ confirmed he didn’t want to work with him again and also Bomber couldn’t be contacted. The rest, as they say, is history.

As I said initially, Bomber didn’t need to burn his bridges and if he had shown a bit of loyalty last September/October then this is probably all over right now. I really hope this doesn’t become a KB like situation with a Champion of our team sledging us in the media for 20 years. Now is the time for us to unite, not snipe at each other through the media.

"I will be cheering for the Cat when they play the Bombers in Rd 10" Mark Thompson - Open Mike

Thanks mate, you’ve done some great things for us but now you’re sounding like KB.

Some folk just like supporting a loser.

We’ve all been angry and hurt by the supplements saga at certain times.

He might hate some people at the club, but to not support the club itself? To bag the club in the media? Have the supporters done this?
No, we’ve stuck by the club and are loyal to the sash.

Bomber can get stuffed if he wants to abandon the club and won’t even celebrate a reunion with teammates that had nothing to do with the saga.

Difference is, I was not involved in the inner workings of the club, nor am I spouting anti-Essendon sound bites to every media person who will listen.

His anger may or may not be justified. Without knowing the specifics of his departure, we may never know. How he handles that anger and whether he acts on it is something we can judge.

Bomber is a legend.

I personally find him way more likable than Hird. I don’t care how unpopular that opinion may be.
