I thought he was promoted?

Does that mean we get picks 1-10?

I heard him talking about it somewhere, sounded like it was kind of a paid retirement where he was more of a consultant now.

Notes from Calder’s most recent game (PMBangers at Bigfooty). Want.

CALDER CANNONS:

#3 Jayden Nguyen

Nguyen did as he typically does against the Chargers, as he racked up footy at will from the defensive half and used it well by foot to launch the Cannons into offence. Nguyen displayed supreme composure and evasiveness across the four quarters, sending opposition the opposite direction with some of his false steps and candy sells to quickly change lanes towards the corridor.

Except that’s not really true. Clearly with Parker plenty of AFL recruiters disagreed since he went relatively lateish, quite a few picks after Steinberg. Even if Shanahan makes it, that doesn’t mean based on the information to hand that he shouldn’t be rated a bit lower than our pick.

That Ariel pick was so out of the blue. Noone had a clue who he was. Parker had strong attributes in juniors. Tough player, a type we don’t go for. We liked project players. Hoping things change with Dodo out of the picture

There absolutely should be, but the club gaining the player should have to pony up at least some of the points. Would stop clubs paying overs to get the player hassle free if moving up a band meant a higher draft cost.

Edit: already suggested:

Get me a team full of small, dynamic kids from diverse backgrounds please.

Except we had a very strong VFL midfield for those games. Tsatas, Setterfield, Hobbs, Sheil?, Hately, etc.

That wasn’t a FA pick. They got WCE’s and GWS’s picks.

The Parker v Steinberg does get thrown up a lot.
Some interesting names around those picks.
Pick 31 Steinberg
Pick 32 Josh Green
Pick 33 Jeremy Howe

Pick 40 Luke Parker.
(At pick 21 Swans selected Jed Lamb.)

I was hoping Jack Darling would fall to our selection 31.

kNIGHTMARES MOCK DRAFT

#27 - End of First Round Compensation Pick: (North Melbourne) – Luke Parker (VIC)
Height: 183cm, Weight: 82kg, DOB: 25/10/1992
Recruited from: Dandenong Stingrays
Style: Marc Murphy
Range: 16-31
Why: Parker at this stage really represents outstanding value here if available and could very easily go 10 + positions higher. Parker is a big time accumulator who was not as good as expected this season which has probably seen him drop to this stage but he has a really high work rate and wins plenty of contested possessions. Very strong mark overhead for his size. Not super speedy but has good body strength for his size. Handy goal kicking midfielder who could fit into this team well, sooner rather than later. Upside is questionable but a very solid selection who at this stage is an absolute bargain. I wouldn’t be surprised for Parker to do a Bastinac and play regular senior footy from season one.

#49 (Gold Coast) - Ariel Steinberg (VIC)
Height: 191cm, Weight: 84kg, DOB: 26/8/1992
Recruited from: Bendigo Pioneers
Style: Josh Kennedy
Range: 30-late
Why: Very athletic forward who in 2009 had a year off AFL playing Gridiron in Canada. Has some nice agility, is generally not a bad kick and is a strong mark both overhead and on the lead. Maybe a little undersized for a key position forward. A little bit intriguing here and the type of guy the Gold Coast should take a risk on.

Knightmare comparing Parker to Marc Murphy in playing style is bold.

Our pick is usually the projectable ‘slider’ who has a big question mark over some major part of their game like kicking ability, size or having no ‘true’ position etc.

From left year.

I really do like how balanced he is with his kicking, easy control and penetration. Seems to have really good control of depth, lots of very nicely weighted kicks to advantage.

Agree. There does need to be compensation. But it is dumb that all teams are penalised by getting pushed back in the draft order. The club to which the player goes under free agency should cough up the compensation. It could still be based on a formula so that the circus of negotiation isn’t a complicating factor.

This bloke was very impressive in the last VFL game. Should be a CAT B choice for sure.

Has speed, is tough, has skills and can kick.

Instantly improves the list.

It’s absolutely true. Parker sliding as far as he did was a mystery that has since been proven to be a gigantic mistake by the recruiting world, not just Essendon. He was exactly what we needed at the time, and it remains a mystery to this day why he wasnt jumped on as our " I cant believe he fell to our pick because we had him rated higher" selection.

Massimo is a case of the club should have known what it had found. The fact that we were able to select him was a consequence of our poor ladder position, and then losing him for peanuts because we incorrectly judged his potential, is a painful outcome we just have to accept.

On the “best player at the pick” approach, EFC has an unbalamced list, and that means that our rating of potential draftees should be heavily influenced by what type of positional player we lack. In my opinion, that elevates a player like Shanahan to be the best player available at out pick.

Honestly, what will we do with the best available player at our pick who is another midfielder or 3rd tall backman?

Very impressed with how quickly he got to his feet. Agility, good acceleration, seemed strong and didn’t look like a bad kick.

I’ve seen very little. Nowhere near enough to establish an educated opinion. But this is blitz and my mind is made up and won’t be changed ever.

Madness not to take him given that we can get him cheap.
