The 2024 Draft [no longer spec] Thread

Yes I think he’s more than quick enough. He probably just didnt get the chance to show it in that game. He can burn off opponents or step around them.

It was a rainy day, heavy ground.

watching your clip, berry seems a small forward in the mould of elliott

Wasn’t he injured for the first half of last year?

Your offer for Stengle would be more than what Merrett gets from the club I reckon.

Is he really that good to justify that sort of money ?

Is Kako going to be similar to Lual in how we took him from WB with a late 30s pick?

Because I think they would probably return the favour.

He missed a chunk, but still played 7 VFL matches and 4 AFL matches

Its tough to judge.

One factor is draft pool, which this year is very deep. There are a lot of good players with talent level not too dissimilar to Kako.

Then you have the position he plays. There are a few small forwards in the pool but not a ton. If a club needs a small forward it makes sense to pick best available in this pool and take a Kako or Berry.

We arent the only club after one. Freo fans I know are drooling over Kako and Berry at the moment.

I think he’s more of a ground level operator than Elliott. Not that Berry can’t take a mark, but he leans more towards crumbing as his 1 wood and then taking marks on the lead second.

Merrett can earn more in endorsements

Gee Champion looks small.
has he fallen off the draft radar to late rookie now?

Hes a tidy ground ball pickup and kick.
Not afraid to lay a bump or cannon into a player either.
And is good at drawing a free kick.

Started a brawl or two too lol

Nephew of Eddie Betts

If were getting Eddie betts (goal kicking coach / indigenous support) and Stengle, should get Champion too on the rookie list (assuming we miss Kako).

Kako looks more likely to me but he would only ever be a small forward at AFL level (not a 25 disp per game midfielder like he has been this year in U18) and if we continually invest in midfielders that kick the ball into the ■■■■■■■ stratosphere 60 times per game then maybe Berry would be the better choice given his marking ability.

Kako would be like Tippa, could go in the middle for a centre bounce or two if we need a spark.

Was a ruck / key forward in his early years ie a beast. Just never grew from there

His output hasn’t been great this season, even playing in a relatively low level comp like the WAFL colts. This champs is a big test for him. He was just okay in game one, some nice moments but not involved as much as you’d like.

given WA are a weaker team this year that would also limit his opportunities to impress.

This is the draft not trade thread.

I’d consider it if we’re getting Berry with our F1 and Kako at a big discount. But I’m a big believer in taking classy forwards, and converting them to other roles if necessary.

Would using our first round pick (~15-18) be too much to pay for Kako? He seems to be rated in the 20s so using our first pick may be a slight overreach but positionally it’s such a big need for us I don’t think I’d be upset at all!! I’ll admit I haven’t seen much of Kako but he seems to have the characteristics we severely lack right now in our forward line.

In that list above (copied below) he’srated #21, but that includes Ashcroft and Camporeale. So equivalent to #19. That doesn’t feel a stretch if Berry is already gone or we rate Kako higher.

Yeah I’ve had similar conversations with guys that follow WA juniors on the big footy boards. When the crop is weak, should you supplement with over-agers to make the squad more competitive in order to allow the guys that are there to showcase their talent better? I think the answer is yes you should.
