The 2024 Draft [no longer spec] Thread

If you’re an interstate team you can benefit from picking country kids over metro though. The go home factor is minimised.

Depends if Geelong want them or not…

Funny…but the only rich people I know who driver range rovers are from the country.

Just as many people doing it tough in the city as the country.

If we can trade back into the top 25-30, based on mock drafts so far and who is supposedly likely to be available, which players do you like for us?

So, my choices would probably be different than Rosa’s. I feel as though our current list is stuck in purgatory, never quite good enough to contend but not bad enough to force a rebuild. I would have tried to do a more dramatic cull this year, but definitely next year.

So, looking towards a 2 to 4 year rebuild, the only part of our list that I really like right now is our midfield. Durham, Caldwell and Tsatas should be a strong trio to build around. We have some other nice pieces like Caddy, but essentially this opens us up to recruiting for any position that’s not pure midfield.

Around the 25-30 range I like any of the tall forwards - Faull, either Whitlock, Shanahan if he slides, Sims, Gerreyn. For the small forwards I like Hannaford or Berry if they’re there which is an outside possibility in the mid 20s, I also like Angove or Dattoli. I like Harry Oliver, Lachie Jaques or Angus Clarke around that range as versatile small/medium defenders with strong disposal and ability to rebound at a good level. I’m expecting Tom Gross to slide and if he does I’d be super keen on him with a pick in the mid to late 20s, he’s a tough, do everything type who could play in almost any “small” role to a high level. I really like Cooper Hynes as a bulldozing medium forward who kicks goals.

Those are some names to keep an eye on.

Who else would you have culled ?

Played against Cooper Haynes’ old man in junior footy. He played for Parkmore (Dandenong District Junior League) for a majority of junior footy. Bit of a man child as he was huge in U13s - U15s level. He played ruck but by the time he got to U18 level which was then Central u18 he wasn’t tall enough for ruck and was basically a third tall / flanker. Got found out pretty quickly. Good player but his physical attributes went against him a bit.

Wishing his son Cooper all the best, from the sounds of it he could be a ripper!

As long as we prioritize composure under pressure and skills I’ll be content

So I read today that Levi Ashcroft won’t be picked at 1. Most have him as the best player in the draft but Richmond will not make Brisbane match a bid at 1. I don’t understand this…Richmond have an absolute need for midfielders and won’t go for him. I know they won’t get him but they should still be holding Brisbane accountable for him.

I’d have been a little bit more ruthless without going completely crazy. Keep Zach Merrett for cultural and leadership reasons, but look to move on some players that are probably more valuable to another team than they are to us if we’re rebuilding the list.

I’m not a Parish hater at all, but he’s got market value, I think is surplus to requirements in our new look midfield, and hasn’t shown he can play anywhere other than midfield to a high level. There have been noises about Draper wanting a move back to SA… I think it generally best to be proactive on these things and move a player like that while we still have the whip hand in negotiations.

Most don’t have him as the best in the draft. He’s one of several that draft watchers and pundits have around that pick 1 range. For me its entirely understandable not to bid on him at 1.

Cooper is an interesting one. Played mostly as a leading medium forward type (think Langford only much more aggressive) before this season. This year he’s played half his time through the midfield and shows some promise in there but I’m a little concerned that he’s thrived at center bounce and stoppage mostly because he’s too big (191cm) and aggressive in there for most skinny 17 year old kids to handle. He’s extremely raw as a mid, not much subtlety yet.

Forward 50 I think is still his game. He’s been a consistent goal kicker. Great leading patterns, uses his body well, above average when the ball hits the deck, pretty long boot so a threat out around the 50m arc.

Sounds like the type of player we need around the fwd half. Take him, Kako and a taller type and the fwd half already looks better, now and into the future.

They would want their player to have the honour of being the #1 pick and the benefits that come with that (rather than give that to Ashcroft).

It also send the message to the kid that they do take at #1 “hey, you were our guy!” Rather than saying “we liked Ashcroft better but had to settle for you”.

Frothing watching us not trade back in

I notice the media are cranking up discussion about probable drafting of Essendon VFL player, Will Hoare. Don’t know anything about him.
Anybody got an opinion of his ability?

Came on really well this year. Seems to be a bit of a late bloomer (he’s now 24*).

Id like to see him get a chance somewhere, just not sure if that’s with us.
Personally I’d have paid out Lav and taken him.

As it stands I’d rather us get games into Hayes. Kids only 19 and imo was equally as impressive.

34 seems a little bit too mature TBH. Very late bloomer indeed
