The 2024 Draft [no longer spec] Thread

If Lalor is the next dustin martin.

■■■■ i’ll be ■■■■■■ at how ■■■■ our club has been at early picks. - when we chump out its recruiting mcgrath, cox, perkins or reid.

Kid looks so freaking talented and hard at it.

That sounds like a pretty good trade plan. May as well slide back as 28 and 31 will be eaten into on draft night

All for sliding our second round picks back in exchange for F2’s but need to target clubs unlikely to finish top 8.

You can’t pick what’s not there.

Yep, sounds like a good plan.

This makes sense but gees next year is gonna be ugly, and likely gets super ugly for BDB

This year our ins would be Kako, some late flyers and DFA pickups

Richmond a year out traded for capital to ontrade to brisbane - knowing exactly what brisbane had f/s and academy wise.

Its no coincidence they also had a fire sale of stars this year either to load up on the first round.

They have obviously researched and targeted this years draft.

Essendon? Geeeez.

Well, sure. If you’re complaining we don’t rebuild more heavily then I’m all with you. But unless you want to give up Caddy some type of rebuild would be required to have got more picks.

Yeah next year theres also less draft points available and it costs more to match on academy and father son.

So being involved heavily next year will have its own rewards for sure

Lamenting that Essendons timing has sucked. Terribly.

Least we have clean air in the recruitment space to try something differently.

I’m all about trading for more draft capital in the future. I’d be trading out this years picks more to get more value next year if we can.

Why? This is the one year that theres enough depth to warrant taking third/fourth round picks.

Especially with 3/4 academy and f/s receiving early bids to swallow up draft picks.

Most of the time in drafts those late picks are tall lanky project players.

This year it seems there will be genuine afl prospects ready to go for 2025 quite deep.

We just implemented a 3yr plan to do more of the same.

Calling it a 3 yr plan just gives brad another contract. (I think he should
mind you as the problem is the list).

We have moved on Stringer and Heppel out of our best 22 really.

That gives brad time to get the most out of the hand Dodoro and co dealt him. Finally playing some of the kids hes held back in the VFL.

Also gives Rosa and O’brien plenty of time to have an impact on our recruitment. FWIW im much more confident with those two working for the club.

I just don’t think you can build a good talent pool when you have the same number of picks as everybody else in each year. You need to find a way to create an advantage through volume of high picks. And you can’t do that buying in when prices are high. You need to creat a scenario like Richmond have, although theirs you could say is too concentrated.

I’d be happy if next year we pushed both out firsts and second to the year after for a big premium again. Really load up in a year to get a block of really talent to build from.

What you suggest is a massive gamble. That the draft you target is good.

You also forgo years of development. Draftees get better training and playing in the AFL system.

Knowing more about the draft/talent pool each year and recruiting players not on other clubs radars is the go. That and recruiting for purpose not “best availableeil”.

Seems the consensus on the first round is pretty solid year in year out.

Whatever Geelong is doing imho is the right tact. They paid unders for Smith.

They attract and really paid unders for Dangerfield.

Probably overs on Cameron - but he still wanted to play for them.

Bang on it’s a deep draft you could well get the same quality of player at 20 as you might at 35.
Which is why iam dumb founded that people are wanting to give up premium first round picks next year just to try and get into a late first round pick

Its a couple of spots in a draft. Its getting a pick a year earlier

Melbourne wont be bottom four with that draw. So use their pick.

Heppell was done. Stringer was a bad boy off field. We’re still chasing finals. The club strategy isn’t set by the list manager, it’s set by the board, CEO and coach. And those are all still the same types.
