Well, sure. If you’re complaining we don’t rebuild more heavily then I’m all with you. But unless you want to give up Caddy some type of rebuild would be required to have got more picks.
I just don’t think you can build a good talent pool when you have the same number of picks as everybody else in each year. You need to find a way to create an advantage through volume of high picks. And you can’t do that buying in when prices are high. You need to creat a scenario like Richmond have, although theirs you could say is too concentrated.
I’d be happy if next year we pushed both out firsts and second to the year after for a big premium again. Really load up in a year to get a block of really talent to build from.
What you suggest is a massive gamble. That the draft you target is good.
You also forgo years of development. Draftees get better training and playing in the AFL system.
Knowing more about the draft/talent pool each year and recruiting players not on other clubs radars is the go. That and recruiting for purpose not “best availableeil”.
Seems the consensus on the first round is pretty solid year in year out.
Whatever Geelong is doing imho is the right tact. They paid unders for Smith.
They attract and really paid unders for Dangerfield.
Probably overs on Cameron - but he still wanted to play for them.
Bang on it’s a deep draft you could well get the same quality of player at 20 as you might at 35.
Which is why iam dumb founded that people are wanting to give up premium first round picks next year just to try and get into a late first round pick
Heppell was done. Stringer was a bad boy off field. We’re still chasing finals. The club strategy isn’t set by the list manager, it’s set by the board, CEO and coach. And those are all still the same types.
