The 2024 Draft [no longer spec] Thread

Lots of junk analysis as though all we had to choose between was 9 or Melbourne first next year. If we didn’t do the Melbourne trade how do we pick up Kako or anyone else.

We had 9,29 and 53(stringer), even with the discount we would be well short of matching the bid

We would have needed to use nexts years first or second to trade in for picks and if we were lucky left with another 3rd.

All the other picks from Melbourne not just gives us a future first, it enabled us to match kako and take more picks this year.

1st we will have 1 this year and 2 next year
2nd round 2 this year and one next year
3rd
3rd 1 this and next.

So we ensured 3 first round draft picks, preserved next years draft hand and will take 2 seconds and a third this year. Any scenario where we took 9 this year would have meant the rest of our picks were significantly worse. Would anyone really give up 3 second round picks to enable us to use 9 instead of Melbournes F1, because that’s probably the cost

It was good trading.

Footy commentators are footy commentators for a reason.
They’re not brain surgeons for the same reason.

If the choice was North’s first (which was available at 8 onwards apparently) or Melbourne’s first + the seconds this year?

I think I prefer the Melbourne first + steak knives.

Agree. I liked Xavier Lindsay but missing out on him isn’t going to haunt us.

I think what this shows is the new team aren’t afraid to think longer term and get creative. Dodoro would just let things happen to us on draft night and hope it all works out.

What’s the knock on Shanahan? From my readings, many pundits were expecting him to be selected in the mid teens? Did he interview badly or are there apparently some basic footy skills or nous that he hasn’t got?

I paid $1700 for my car insurance last year and then I didn’t have an accident. $1700 completely wasted! And the thing is I was 90% sure I wasn’t going to have an accident and I paid it anyway. How utterly stupid am I!

EFC’s just as bad. They were 90% sure Kako wasn’t going before 9, but what did they do? Only redeeming fact is that while I’ll never get my $1700 back, EFC gets a first rounder back next year.

You made a blunder, it happens.

Nit picking here, the knock on him was his defensive pressure and 2nd efforts (or lack of) while forward, Stringeresque vibes! But I’m 100% sure this is an easy fix, I’m not sure clubs would be worried.

I think it is just a majorly deep draft! There will be some surprises (kids going later and much earleir than expected).

So of Cal’s projected phantom top 30, Whitlock , Shanahan, Moraes , Alger remain. Considering three picks still to come, he’s a good chance to have nailed 29 of the 30, albeit slightly out of order.

The talk of us making a mistake by trading out 9 as Kako was bid on after that pick is up there with those complaining at us not drafting Oliver and taking Parish instead, like it was an option.

Not sure why people are getting dragged into the rubbish some in the media are spewing out.
Simply put:

  • we had 9 and 28 at the start of trade period.
  • at the end of Day 1 of the Draft, we have Kako, Picks 37, 39 & 43 and Melb’s F1.
Basic maths says we’ve done very well.

Yep
Played it perfectly.

Wonder if Dogs would trade 31 for our 37 & 60. Pretty sure we need to move 60, if we’re not planning on using it but want to get Nguyen as a possible Cat B.

It looks good on paper, just like we looked good on paper in 2020.

The potential error on the kako trade pre draft is simply that we could have had Norths future 1st.

But as @EssendonPride1 mentioned what about the back end picks we also got from the dees.

Still the difference between melbourne and norths f1 could be stark. Potentially two top 5 picks like richmond will likely have if we have a bad year.

Either way im stoked to see what other kids join the club and having a couple of first rounders next year.

This Ablett bloke going on as if Kako slipped to pick 50.
For an ‘expert’ he actually doesn’t understand how our trade works for us.
Truly baffling someone could be that daft.

We started trade period with what pick 9 and a pick in the 30s?

We will end trade period having taken

13, 37, 39, 43

And perhaps a back end nga like Nguyen with 60, 91, 97

And turned our future 2nd into another future 1st.

His alternative was to do what Sydney did when they missed out on Dunkley…

I like Melbourne’s pick + the extra points better.

There’s a fair chance that North improve and Melbourne don’t. As much as people think Melbourne are still contenders and North is still stuffed, I see a world where Melbourne’s pick is better than North’s. It’s obviously not guaranteed.

North has a lot of young talent that might click sooner than people expect.

(I mean I hope they don’t for the Clarko melts, but if they do then the Tiger Army melts are also worthwhile)
