The 2024 Draft [no longer spec] Thread

did you watch essendon vfl on the weekend

4 straight from some nice lead ups.

monster fluent leg on him. really lovely set shot technique.

dare say after that are recruiting team will be falling over themselves to nab kako and Shanahon in the 1st round

Did I see him on the weekend? Well I did just make a video of that performance and post it a couple of messages up the thread … so yes I did.

I think his VFL performance will be a strong data point in his favour, but I’m not sure that it moves things too dramatically. The questions that are limiting his draft stock right now weren’t really addressed by anything he did in that game.

I don’t like being in this situation where it sounds like I’m unfairly negative on a kid. I really like Jobe Shanahan. Rating him as a second round pick in this draft is not a bad thing AT ALL. This is a very deep pool. He had a very nice debut VFL performance, one that I hope he and his family are buzzing about.

Nothing I say matters anyway, I’m just some guy on the internet.

his kicking really is very very nice. relaxed, balanced, easy power.

Its all good.

I feel as though Shanahan is almost perfectly build to make fools out of 50% of draft watchers. His size, frame, the amount of muscle he already carries at his age, combined with the way he moves jumps and his coordination level. He’s like a perfect physical specimen of a key forward.

But then he can go missing for stretches in games. And there will be a few instances every game where you’d love him to launch himself into a contested mark and bust open a pack… and he just doesnt do it.

So there will be people out there that understandably look at him and see the next buddy franklin or something. Fair enough too. And there are others out there that look at him and see the next Josh Schache.

I think most draft watchers are kinda hedging their bets on him right now.

I see him as the next Peter Wright.

jack gunston? bit a undersized, good on the lead, reliable in front of the sticks, with a bit more length in his kicking. probably complitments caddy well. though both slightly undersized.

how is his tank and pace

Pace seems fine, although I don’t have his 20m sprint time on hand.

He played higher up the field at times for the Allies, would present up to the wings as a down the line release target at times, and seemed pretty well suited to that. Endurance seemed solid.

I wouldn’t say he’s undersized myself. I’ve seen him reported at 194 and 196cm in different places… I’d be surprised if he’s not 196 when you see him standing next to other tall guys. Plus he’s got wide shoulders and plenty of muscle already for an 18 year old.

sure, i just think there’s a lot of bean pole key forwards over 200cm now so when i say undersized i really just mean not 200cm plus

I actually think that those really tall key forwards are a liability. I think 195cm is the sweet spot and any significantly taller than that they lose their agility. There are obviously exceptions.

yeah wright’s lack of agility has been badly exposed this season. if he had hill or cameron at his feet it probably would be the glaring issue it is.

With caddy being on the shorter side, i would like our next key forward to be a little taller to compliment him. About 196 and above would be nice.

For me its more about complementary skill sets. Fortunately Caddy can do a lot of different things so he gives us flexibility. He competes hard in the air, and he’s very good below his knees, applies strong defensive pressure. I feel as though a really good lead/mark forward like Armstrong would fit well alongside him.

Yes i agree. Armstrong reminds me of Michael Rudd last year who i really liked, however he too was on the shorter side so slid a bit. Ideally we get Armstrong (with Lloyd coaching him you’d think this increases the chances) and he grows a few cm extra. I’m sure there is a way you could estimate if guys are gonna grow anymore. Simply by asking them how much they’ve grown in the past 6 months would be a start, to indicate if there’s a chance, or to determine if they have already stopped growing.

Rudd ended up missing out entirely, which was a little strange. He’s been training with Carlton’s VFL team and playing for his local club.

Did he? ■■■■, i thought he got taken in the 50s or so. That just shows when people say ‘there isn’t enough talent for 20 teams’, that there is plenty of talent out there that don’t even get drafted.

Yeah. I think the big thing though was that Ruddy just didn’t hit the scoreboard enough. He was improving in that area as the season went on and had a really good champs series, but his goal per game average at Talent League level just wasn’t really there.

I feel height is an overrated stat for key position players. Last I checked you can’t mark the ball with your head, and there’s every chance a 190cm Caddy has a greater measurable aerial presence than a 196cm player due to his leap & reach.

A volleyball style ‘spike reach’ measurement would be more relevant than pure height imo.

Yeah, he was superb in the national champs for Vic country i thought, reminded me of a Jeremy Cameron the way he moved. Again though, was only 192cm i think from memory and yeah maybe he wasn’t as good in the Coates league. Or maybe i just completely overrated him.
