A kid that kicks 11 goals in 3 games at VFL is definitely not wasted with pick 8/9
Other teams don’t really bid on players to make a point period.
Like Daicos went at 4, GC’s academy picks basically went where they were projected to last year. The Camporeale twins probably won’t go 1st round this year even though you could bend FCFC over a barrel to make them pay
So Shanahan is the new shiny thing this year.
Surely that depends on who else is in the draft?
This is the problem I have with people watching Shanahan and saying “OMG we must draft this kid!” without having watched any other prospect or knowing anything about the pool.
You might be right, perhaps he is the perfect pick. But without knowing anything about the rest of the pool there’s no way to say for sure.
True, excuse my tin foil hat conspiracy theories.
could be too good for the VFL but struggle in the 1’s
He’s a good size, tackles hard and his body held up very well at senior level. Not many kids have this sort of impact in the VFL.
The first round is very stacked with midfielders and I don’t think we need the 8th best midfielder in the draft when we can possible take the 2 best forwards.
Wasn’t even enjoyable at the time. Not personally anyway. I know it is ‘supposed’ to be but after this long you can see through the bullshit¡t of what’s ‘real’ and what isn’t. We were still clearly paddling and had no business in finals anyway even if we fell in. Another meaningless result that does nothing but incrementally sabotage us.
Melbourne ahead of us in the draft order now and you’d expect may have a close look at one of Armstrong or Shanahan.
Personally I’m a little nervous going all out for another lead up key forward when we have a game plan that doesn’t suit them.
Sure but for all you know, all those midfielders are Harley Reids.
I’m not saying that Shanahan isn’t the right guy, I’m just saying that you’re basing your conclusion off insufficient information.
I can just sense this thread is about to descend into the same thing that always happens at this time of year. The group think fixates on a single kid to the exclusion of all others, and then when we inevitable don’t end up picking that kid we get ranting and raving and rioting.
Its obnoxious.
Its a numbers game. The first 10 picks are likely to be ALL or mostly midfielders. So with pick 8, we’re getting the 8th ranked midfielder in the draft. They could be amazing (like Harley Reid), but the chances are low at pick 8. However if we pick a forward with our first pick we’re likely getting the best or second best rated forward in the draft.
That’s completely irrelevant. If all the key forwards stink, then they’re not going to magically get better just because they’re the first one picked.
We need a player with skill off half back. A Dan Houston type.
True…but again, the odds are better. Drafting these kids is as much luck and risk as it is identifying talent.
The numbers matter as much, if not more, than “who looks better”.
I was also thinking that using a top 10 pick on a kid who didn’t make vic country team may be risky?
Or did he make it but missed some games?
It’s very relevant though when discussing picks before a Kako bid who will usually be listed in terms of his draft pick on a list that includes academy/compo picks.
The fact that people believe that because someone has played in our VFL side they are the best player available is quite staggering.
They didn’t just “play” in our VFL. They kicked 11 goals in 3 matches and had a haul of 5. Not even Caddy had stats that good in the VFL this year and he’s a gun.
So is TD1 seriously not coming back??
Surely he comes back.
Yes, there’s luck. Yes there’s risk.
But if (like this year) there’s a cluster of key forward prospects all rated in the 20s and you pick one at 8 instead of players you rate much higher because “its all luck anyway” then I think you’re making a big mistake.
Mind you its very possible that Rosa has Shanahan in his top 10. Again, I don’t want to pre-judge and I’ll back his choice whatever it is. I’m just addressing the points you’re making here.
