Any Blitzers out there into amateur astronomy? I’ve been mucking around with a cheap crappy refractor recently looking at the moon. Managed to find Jupiter but it was pretty much a small orange ball (in good conditions).
Regardless, I’m hooked now and want to get a good entry level scope. Can anyone recommend a scope? Basically I want to be able to see the bands of Jupiter and the Jovian moons as well as the rings of Saturn.
There is a local group that meets once a month around the Mornington peninsula. I’d start there as you’ll get to test loads of telescopes at different price points and be around people who knows what is great to look at. To see the bands in Jupiter though it’s a fairly good telescope you’d be investing in.
FWIW several years ago (around 17 I think) there used to be this event at Royal Park called “Starry Nights” (or something of the sort). I went a couple of times, but I’m not sure it actually ran that long.
Ha. The other night I was checking out the moon with a few guests over. Everyone had a turn at looking through the scope. When they were finished I said “Now, I also read palms if anyone is interested.”

When? and where do they meet? I am in that locale and somewhat interested.

Well tonight’s the night. Just had the old telescope out and Jupiter is just rising in the east. I had to lift the scope out to the road out the front to get a line of sight because it’s low in the sky but in a few hours it will be sitting up there like a peach ready for picking. Even with my aging eyes, a vintage telescope and street lighting all 4 moons are visible on the left side of Jupiter and I could make out two bands.
Looks good!
PS I’ve a hand me down entry level reflector that I scored from my brother in law who’s long moved on to higher realms and even sans maintenance it still picks out Jupiter’s highlights. I wouldn’t spend big dollars until I was sure I was a bit obsessive - like my brother in law who spends obscene amounts on things like custom built cases to hold his “12 inch”. And yes I keep telling him not to mention his “12 inch” in public.
PPS I’m on the Peninsula and away from the worst of the city based light pollution, other than some street lighting in quiet streets.
Just out again, the darker back reserve this time. It’s pristine viewing conditions and Jupiter’s putting on a show and the Milky Way looks mighty fine tonight just with the naked eye.
