The Comedy Thread

There is certainly a touch of the 'Kurt Cobain's' about Bill Hicks, including the fact they died not even two months apart. The mythology of the 'dead artist' certainly rings true, to a point. But it's easy to forget that Bill was only 32 when he died, which in comedian land, is fark all. Most comedians don't really find their style or audience until their 30's. Bill was already a veteran. It's more than possible that his best work was still ahead of him.

Actually the incredible thing about Bill is that he already looked a veteran by 19. Those little clips of him performing as a 16 year old are scary good.....

OK, I know, It's almost like I'm stalking him, but this "hot off the press" ABC radio interview is gold. He rationalises why he thinks  being female stops female comedians from being funny and then hangs sheet on Scum supporting Dave Hughes, and clearly more people should do that.

I'm all HYPE HYPE HYPE now for Melbourne show.

Oh god... that part about female comics :0

Great interview. Man, if you like live stand-up don't ever go live in a non-English speaking country. I haven't had a chance to see a live show in years, cos I can never seem to crack a good act when I'm back in Melbourne for a holiday. Would love to see Stanhope.

Stanhope mentioned Maria Bamford as a good female comedian, and she gets talked up a lot, but any time I’ve checked out a YouTube clip of her it’s been pretty unfunny. Can anyone point me to something good from her?

Are there any female comedians that you really rate? Sarah Silverman is pretty good, but I find it hard to raise many laughs for the ladies in a stand-up setting. On panel shows and TV series is where they seem to shine more.

To be honest, I actually think Australia's Fiona Scott Norman is close to the best aussie comedian of any gender going around. Not sure if there's anything on youtube which shows her at her best, but her last show 'The Needle and the Damage Done' sent me into such hysterics I felt like I tore an abdominal muscle. She can be pretty awesome at live unscripted gameshows/debates and also is the first to head into paedophile joke territory at any chance she gets (ie not afraid to deeply offend the majority of her audience for the amusement of a few)....

I also quite rate the English/Iranian comic Shappi Khorsandi.

I used to be quite disparaging about female comics, but I've grown out of that view, and definitely seen very funny ones over the years (that weren't lesbians).   I don't think Stanhope's justification is really that persuasive... ie ugly undesirable guys develop humour to attract mates. Well, why can't supposedly undesirable women also develop humour to attract mates too? I don't see the gender specificity is his argument....

Bunch of unfunny people doing slots written for them with the 1, single, achingly repetitive point "X is a jerk" ?

I put "Roasts" up there with footage of kids starving to death in Somalia. Any, and all of them.

All time highlight of those roasts is when Snoop Dogg offhandedly said to Seth McFarlane "Seth, there ain't no n***** watchin the Cleveland Show"

A tad harsh hahahaha

If a movie I watched had 1 good line in an hour... You get the odd nugget in them but the whole format and angle of them tends to bury anyone funny under a cavalcade of B / C / D grade Yank celebs who aren't comedians.

I dunno about that HAP, some of the roasts are pretty good. The James Franco Roast had plenty of gold. I'll agree that when they are bad (Lets make Hulk Hogan try and do comedy) they are really , really bad.

The man, the king, the Legend... Mr Bill Burr is coming to Melbourne in January.

Dude, that would awesome.

Thanks for the tips on female comedians posted here. I’m aware of/have watched a few but will chase up the others.
