The concert and gig thread

Do they only know 23 songs. Thank goodness Pearl Jam know over 100 songs to be play live that they form a setlist, from fan favourites, deep cuts, covers to even playing whole albums.

That’s what we compared last night to.

Both nostalgia acts but PJ are way more entertaining. Songs of different tempos and complexity.

I got bored of the same tempo and G C D chord progressions.

I mean given their touring history, audience, etc etc I don’t think it’s really a comparison.

Oasis hasn’t toured in 16 years and people expect them to play a fully nostalgia driven show based on really just a couple of albums. Their fans arent spending their days arguing about whether album X or album Y was their best album etc.

PJ have toured regularly, and have a much bigger catalogue that their fans care about, and will always end up leaving out something that is lived by fans.

I listened to an interview with Tom Morello recently where he talked about playing with Springsteen, and the sheer number of songs he’d have to know. They could walk out on stage some nights, and Bruce would turn around first song and say “we’re playing this” and they just have to know it and be ready. And then play for 3 hours, with him orchestrating the set list on the fly in parts.

But 3 nights of exactly the same songs. Imagine if you were off to Sydney to see them for 2 nights.

At least with PJ if you want to see some interstate shows you get different setlists.

Even Coldplay mix it up a little bit going by their recent shows, but not a lot…..if you are into that.

I make a note not to check setlists online before I go to a show. Gotta be a surprise.

I can’t imagine it’s that hard to vary the setlist a little- sure press some buttons for the graphics but it’s not like “hold the Concorde flyover- they’ve pushed back Supersonic again!”. Just a few swaps would mean a lot to the hardcore fans- my daughter met someone who’d flown from Singapore for it. A few years ago Liam played solo and was asking the crowd what to play next- perhaps it was just as rehearsed but it felt spontaneous, cheaper and crazier. None of the theatregoers attended- plenty of hard drinking British and Irish backpackers. It was so badly organised the tennis centre cut the power on him, yet the atmosphere in the crowd was supreme.

Bored? Really. You must’ve been the only one. Last night was great fun and that was my second time there in 4 days.

They’re a pretty bland band. They went in and out of fashion pretty quickly.

I saw them in 2004 on the downswing at Festival Hall. That was a much better gig.

As I said I enjoyed the sing along. The time at the pub before the gig was great as well. But not many people were amped on the way home on the train.

Anyone else at The Church tonight at The Forum? It’s my first time seeing them and I’m not really sure what to expect.

I also may be the youngest person here at 35 hahah.
