The Cricket Thread (part 10) - from Feb 2025

What a shame the crowd was so sparse. The joint would have been rocking had it been full. Literally completely empty stands. Such a shame.

Sorry Chop, just an over-reaction on my part. Apologies.

SK looked nervous and played the wrong line. Inglis played a really poor shot.

With Green he’d want to sort his hands and feet out very quickly if he wants to bat 3 or 4. Pushing with hard hands. His wasn’t a poor shot - it’s poor technique. Similar dismissals to Lords.

He has the talent and averages 50’in FC cricket (very good) but he seems to freeze up in tests. Like I posted earlier he’s played 29 tests and only gets above 50 around 17% of the time. In 46 innings he’s only got above 50 on 8 occasions. That’s not sustainable for 3 or 4. Head is 28% and Uzi 29% as a comparison.

Remember a guy called G Hick? Averaged 52 in FC and low 30s in tests. Green’s numbers very similar. I’m still hopeful on Green but with 29 tests under his belt it’s well and truly time.

He’s played a handful of tests as a batter only and in the top order.

Most of his cricket has been as a lower-middle order all rounder. He will need some time to adjust. He’s absolutely miles ahead of the next best options at Shield level.

Everyone gets excused, except Green cops three paragraphs….

Predictable.

No mention of his mate Inglis who isn’t a top orders butthole

180 is a true and fair reflection of Australia’s batting ability unless it is on pitches at home that are roads.

He is miles ahead and yes looks great at Shield/FC level. So did G Hick. But he’s played nearly 30 tests and the last 6 tests he had batted 3 or 4.

My concern is that Shield cricket standard is actually poor so Green dominating at Shield level may not tell us much.

Let’s see how he plays the rest of the series but my gut feeling is he’s technically not a number 3 or 4 and number 6 all rounder might be where he has to play.

You’re talking complete nonsense I mentioned Inglis several times above. Should I point these out

all good mate, none required.

It tells us that the alternatives that aren’t even performing at Greens level in the shield are even more dire.

But realistically Green is not a 3.

And Inglis is not a number 4

The problem for Inglis now is if he wants to play test cricket it has to be as a top order bat.

Head, Webster, Carey is set and forget now. So as a bat, you need to be able to make it in the top four, otherwise it’s a (barring injury) 3-4 year wait.

Why is he batting there then? Green is a far better option at number 4 given he averages 53.6 there at test level.

Marnus batting at 3 even in his horrendous form provides far better structure to the top 6.

Whats the answer? Our top six has so many holes. We really should have let Konstas play against Sri Lanka
Need to get as much games into players in the correct positions as possible before Ashes

  1. Uz
  2. Konstas
  3. ?
  4. Smith
  5. Head
  6. Green
  7. Carey

Where is the SLUG?

He’s played 29 tests and averages 50 plus in FC cricket. To say he’s looked scratchy batting at 3 would be an understatement. He only gets above 50 in 17% of his innings. Of course he’s going to get 3 paragraphs.

Inglis and SK are young very early in their careers and both played poorly which I mentioned.

Of course
