Green 100% earnt his spot as a batsman IMO, he now looks completely at sea and devoid of confidence at test level though, I think webster keeps him out of the team when we get back home.
Also think Inglis earnt his chance for the next batting order opening with his sri Lanka done but unfortunately the opening was way to high up the order for him, he’s still going to be a good backup or replacement to head or Carey in the next 5 or so years.
As someone pointed out above an inform Marnus makes this whole thing look so much better, if he can be trusted at 3 then it gives space for a couple of less experienced openers
It’s been tough to watch the last few years, seems hell bent on just surviving at the test level, he’s faced a hell of a lot of balls for that 30 odd average. Absolutely unable to rotate the strike and just waiting for that killer ball.
Not sure if it’s possible contractually, but if Smith is good to go for the second Test, I’d be tempted to go back to Glamorgan for some first class cricket if I was Marnus. But maybe he just needs a break from the game and then hit the nets for the Queensland shield season prep.
He played 5 games, had four scores under 10. Was fine once he got in, but failed cheaply as well. Two of his 3 100’s were also against Kent who are bottom of division 2.
This would be a good approach. Sounds like Marn needs to get his head right and feel bat on ball. Someone said his obsession with becoming a ODI player and being part of the WC really undid his very sound technique. Not sure if that’s true but the timeline certainly correlates.
The Australian test XI three years from now is a very interesting prospect.
You could guess and still only get maybe 3 or 4 right.
You’d say all of Khawaja, Smith, Starc, Hazlewood will certainly be done.
Then we know Lyon wants to play forever but he’d be 40 so you’d think that’d be about it, Carey would be days off 37 so he’d be borderline and Cummins will be 35 so he’d be well into the twilight.
Yep, you have to back him in if you are going to play him at number 3. If you cut him or shuffle him around too much too soon you will end up messing with one of your brightest young stars
