The Cricket Thread. RIP Phil Hughes

Sporting declaration from Sri Lanka. 300 or so at around 4.5 an over on day 5.

Over to you Pakistan.

Geoff Lawson said on the radio that no team in Ashes history has lost all 100 wickets in a 5 test series, anyone know if this is true or not.

Re: Bailey - I haven’t heard such a spirited argument for someone retaining their spot in the team based on their leadership ability since nickyd’s defense of Ed Cowan.

Probably is, we've had 2 whitewashes in history, and I remember England declaring in Adelaide 2006 so we didn't take 100 that series and fair chance a similar thing happened in 1921 or whenever it was.

save bails.

26 runs off an over. Bailey goes to SAf...

Don't believe it is:

I'd be struggling to think why bailey should go to south africa. he's pretty much done nothing all series bar that 50 odd or whatever it was

ITT;

One guy saves his spot with 1 hit of 53; another dropped because he "failed" with a 43 in the first dig here... the highest of any top order batsman of either side in the 1st innings...

Thanks for that.
I suppose he could have said in a 5 nill sweep and I missed that part.

Hoggy thinks we should replace Bailey with Cameron White- leading batsman in SS this year, great slips catcher and can bowl a few leggies. Tactically strong. Not a bad suggestion

Yeah, nah. White isn't up to ODI let alone Test standard.

Re: Bailey - I haven't heard such a spirited argument for someone retaining their spot in the team based on their leadership ability since nickyd's defense of Ed Cowan.

I'm not normally one who buys into it, but we are one innings away from a 5 nil win in the ashes, and while he hasn't set the world on fire, the team is working well, as a team, and he is apart of that.

I wouldn't mind if he is given the SA tour to find some form and get some runs, and if he doesn't, then back to the drawing board.

What's the alternative, give Hughes or Kawaja another go ? despite how many attempts already ?

Granted those players haven't been given an extended run similar to what I'm suggesting bailey gets right now, however what's the point of shuffling deck chairs from series to series to see if one of these players can finally actually stand up, given them an extended chance, when it's their go, and see if they can stand up, rather than one or two tests here and there.

That being said if they'd lost the series then ones opinion may be different on the subject.

Horrible horrible suggestion

Sad to note that Pakistan didn't take up the challenge set by Sri Lanka. Obviously it's hard for a computer viewer to judge but from the hour or so I watched at the start of the middle session the pitch looked like a road and the bowling, apart from Herath, was pedestrian at best. The batsmen were driving on the up through the off side so they obviously had faith in the bounce and the outfield was in good condition. They gave up the ghost as soon as they lost a wicket, didn't even opt to send in a hitter or 2 to test the waters. This despite the fact that there was little chance of being bowled out with a session to go providing you were no more than 5 down; Sri Lanka batted for ages for the 5th wicket.

Goes without saying that there wasn't much of a crowd on the 5th day in neutral venue but there must have been many millions watching. Well done Sri Lanka at least for unholding their end of the bargain

Could have been a great game, instead it was a damp squib. Add this to the recent SA v India stalemate, where SA wouldn't swing the bat with a handful of runs to get and 3 wickets in hand. Seems like too many teams are unwilling to go for a win if there's any risk of a loss. Shame really. If this is what test cricket is going to be it will be harder and harder to convince fledging supporters that it's worth saving.

Maybe it's time to introduce incentives for victories into the test arena. Soccer introduced 3 points for a win and away goals counting double to encourage teams to take risks and score. Could test cricket introduce a similar accounting of results?

Some thought bubbles:

-Draws and losses score no points for instance with a world league table and significant prize money at season's end.

-Limit first innings to a maximum of 120 overs and insist on 100 overs a day for first 2 days. This would mean second innings starting by at least the middle of the test and encourage the use of spinners. Start matches a bit earlier, the dew is not a factor in many places where cricket is played, and cut down the lunch and tea breaks.

-Maybe introduce field restrictions for second innings to prevent defensive field settings.

These are just thought bubbles and I'm sure there are serious flaws but something should be done to prevent boring, negative cricket.

He's done close to nothing in a white wash. He's over 30, doesn't bowl and all the matches were played in Australia. Regardless of this innings where it doesn't matter he's failed.

Time to give someone else(not a Hughes even though i'm a fan or a Kawaja), someone else completely and really experiment and trail out new players in this slot.

That being said, in Boof we trust.

Have to be in the mix, if they're looking for a 5/6. New lease on life since giving up the captaincy, improved a lot with the bat.
When they picked him, did they have him in as a pretty much front line spinner? Went on an Indian tour IIRC

White would be a good chance. He is scoring big runs in all forms at the moment. And he is a very safe set of hands in the slips cordon. I don’t think his bowling would add anything. If rather Smith be given the ball.

Why would you be talking about when you declare? There are 3 days to go, f'Chrissake. No point in us dawdling, particularly if the pitch is playing up a bit...if I were to declare, it'd be 40 minutes before tea....tomorrow.

Yep, no bad weather on the way. Bat until we are dismissed, pitch will be a nightmare by tomorrow
