The defensive contested 1v1 thread

Good post. I don’t necessarily agree with this but, but I do the rest.

Be interesting to know how many contests McKay has lost by trying to mark when he should be spoiling.

Yep.
Just take a look at the posts in his thread…

A good sample of the sentiment surrounding him.

Time to bump this much-loved topic again for season 2025.

Before I start, a reminder that an explanation for how the stat is calculated is listed in the OP and first few posts. I know I re-read it when I saw Zach Reid’s numbers. Quick shortcut reminder: It has to be a 50-50 1v1 contest that both players have a chance of winning.

Anyway, our numbers so far:

2025 1v1’s Losses Loss %
McKay 16 4 25.0
Reid 13 2 15.4
Prior 7 4 57.1
Redman 6 1 16.7
McGrath 5 2 40.0
Ridley 3 0 0.0
Roberts 2 0 0.0

And the leaders of the comp:

1v1’s Losses Loss %
Jacob Weitering 10 0 0
Darcy Moore 20 1 5.0
Sam Taylor 19 1 5.3
Jack Silvagni 16 1 6.3
Callum Wilkie 12 1 8.3
Charlie Combden 19 2 10.5

So it’s still pretty early to make any sweeping commentary on these, but some patterns are slowly emerging. McKay actually in career best form with us for this stat, and Reid looking pretty tidy. And sadly Prior’s numbers meet the eye test.

Anyway, will update every 3-4 weeks or so.

Damnit Peos where’s the teams’ averages?

Prior is like one of those fourth-tier commandos in every navy seal/special forces movie - you hear his nickname maybe once early in the film, he’s in great physical condition and he seems a likeable chap.

But when the whips are cracking and the heat is on, he’s really just there as cannon-fodder and an early body count for the superior predators/aliens etc.

Geez, give me a minute!

We were bottom 2 for this stat most of last year, so sitting mid table is an improvement.

Yeah, 31.6% loss rate in Aug 2024 good for equal worst club so moving to below AFL average is a good effort, although we have had not the hardest fixture so far. Add this to the list of statistical areas we’ve been improving on

So looking at this, we concede the second most one on ones in the comp?

How does this compare to last year?

We allow equal second most per game, yes.

Last year in July we allowed around 5th most defensive 1v1s and we lost them at a rate that was third worst in the comp

My god.

It seems Zach Reid has been injured so much that we haven’t been able to train the Essington into him.

Good to hear the improvement.

But like all stats, I’m weary to draw conclusions for a few more weeks, given we haven’t had the toughest draw so far

We’ve conceded more than last year but improved loss rate (though it’s still pretty ■■■■)

Our entire backline each being in the double digits for 1v1 losses appears somewhat alarming.

I’d say 25% and under is pretty decent but no idea what the comp averages are tbh so 5 in the list are under that mark, only 2 over it

The league leaders won’t hold those %'s over the full year.

My highly technical ranking system is:

  • Under 10%: Super super elite elite. Maybe 1 or 2 guys might hold that at scale over the season, probably none will
  • Between 10-20%: Elite
  • Between 20-25%: Above average
  • Between 25-30%: Average
  • Above 30%: Poor
