My understanding is that Hughes wanted the song regardless of what the record company said, so got Danny Hutton of Three Dog Night to cover it with session musos. ‘Danny Hutton Hitters’ don’t seem to be a real band, but I’m prepared to stand corrected.

The film is by Curtis Hanson who also directed L.A. Confidential.
He was very, very upset when Mrs Wim informed him that Waiting For The Miracle also appeared on Natural Born Killers, as he thought the tracks he’d chosen were first-timers, and was especially upset at the idea his film might be associated with that one.
