it’s going to be a huge job for McVeigh .a lot of people myself included have been emotionally drained by this process . they have manipulated us at every turn to get what they wanted . they squibbed making the announcement while the fans were sort of still going to games for fear of backlash. we’ve been through enough and at the very least we deserved an honest and open process , not this staged managed drip fed media managed BS
by any measure they are getting off to a very bad start. it’s hard to give a shiit about what happens there from now on

I’m pleased about the appointment (by and large) but not giving candidates a courtesy call before briefing the media is bullshit.

Strong disagree. This is a very senior very public role and use of the media is paramount. It was kept tight for two months and now, immediately following the final siren of the final game, the media run with it. A call to the other three to brief on where they sit with McVeigh is the very least that should have been done. It’s amateur and very poorly advised. That Hird is forced to comment having read the media reports and not heard from the club is straight out of the Essendon ‘process management guide’ which states do the opposite of whatever best practice is.

The commentary surrounding the Essendon appointment is a bit bizarre IMO. The search was narrowed down to four with some reporting for each candidate being the favourite and a shoo-in at some stage of the process. It was a 1-in-4 shot to name the right coach based off this, with very little information getting out according to most journalists/opinion columnists, who were naming people based on gut feel. The popular vote didn’t win the spot, but this is the outcome of a process.
We have had Simmo who was heading the Blues’ coaching panel critique our own search, Matthews on the Lions board giving his personal opinion (but because he has his 3AW radio hat on that is apparently all professional and no issues there), Hinkley well into the Tassie coaching process and making commentary about our search, as well as candidates prioritising a rival team to only be beaten by the interim coach in a boat race.
If the least we can come out of this, is that our board and coach are aligned with Welshy and Mcveigh, then that is a win. The board will be riding on this appointment and ensuring that it works out.

They just wanted a fair process.. that selected the person they wanted to win.
