The new Essendon Coach [spec]

i think carlton will be all over him like a bad rash

I tend to agree with you on the overarching point, but ffs take this to the Saga thread.

This is the John Longmire and James Kelly thread.

Take the drugs stuff to the Hird thread.

Scarlett’s at the Dees isn’t he?

wat

Hinkley said the other day eventually we will have different coaching structures, in which there is no head coach.

So I propose:

Longmire - coaching director, list mgmt liaison
Hird - game day connection (team talks / game plan adherence)
Kelly and Bartel - game day strategy + midfield/stoppages
Forwards - Skipworth
Backs - Solly/Egan
(McCartney - development)

All - game plan, training…Longmire chairs meetings + tie-breaking vote

No head coach

Spread the soft cap but also spread the head coach pressures (pressers, training, media through the week, free agents, blame, etc)

@Tim Roberts what is the best email address to send my consultancy invoice?

If it was someone who’s only had experience at a club that’s not won anything in 25 years - yes, that would be a deal breaker for me.

I don’t see the appeal of either of these guys personally.

Can you walk me through the attraction of James Kelly? Beyond the obvious links to Essendon and a successful Geelong, what has he actually done that makes him such a compelling coaching candidate for some?

Being an assistant coach in a very successful team that won a premiership recently is pretty compelling.

I posted this in another thread. Like any coach, we are just guessing based on limited anecdotal info but I hope he is a serious option for us.

What makes Pops Kelly a more attractive option than Enright coming out of the Geelong system?(to you)

I thought Sam Edmunds news that the blues wanted to talk to Skipworth, Gia and Longmire was interesting. To me that could

Mean they may have had interest from us and the blues therefore maybe trying to sound them out first before looking more broadly.

Ie one or more could be off the table.

Can i say part of me doesn’t like a few of the senior candidates sit back and note Essendon hasnt contacted them yet. Or if Essendon contact me i will hear what they have to say. Almost a touch of entitlement.

I am at a point where give me someone calling the club pro-actively saying i would love the job at Essendon and I think I would I be good for it. I understand you will have a process but just know I am very much interested.

Give me that attitude

I like Enright as an option too.

Other than Pops’ time at and familiarity with Essendon, not much really.

One concern I have with Enright is whether he has been infected with dour Ross Lyon football during his time at St Kilda. I think we’ve had enough of that.

Assessing coaches (particularly first timers) is just based off vibes mostly.

I think that’s only ex senior coaches in the media isn’t it?

the younger assistant coaches will apply when Essendon announce how too I’m sure.

And you want it as anonymous as possible. Makes it easier or harder the next time a coaching gig comes up if you miss out.

Wouldn’t that be a good thing though? Sitting with Chris Scott, sitting with Ross Lyon.

Two different approaches to observe whilst you do your thing as an assistant.

The Sainters really rate Enright I think.

from a presence perspective and the way he talks publicly I like Enright a lot

He’d at least have an idea of what works well (Scott) and what doesn’t (Ross).

You are getting this wrong though. We aren’t an attractive club to be at.

Scott has a very experienced elite list - he would spend a lot more time in strategy than development.

Lyon on the other hand has a completely different challenge.

reckon it’s a great mix of prep.
