The Pro Cycling Thread (Part 1)

But Jayco should have been in the break when you consider the objectives for this race. Last win for Jayco is over two months ago. Landa crashes in stage five and breaks his collarbone.

SUrprised at the paucity of coverage on sbs. THought they would have all WT races.

MVD just rode away

Great ride from l pithie just unfortunate he fell with 30 to go

It was never in doubt.

Teenager who has never cared about live sport of any type watched the entirety of PR last night, and excitedly told me about the finish and even the race for 2nd this morning.

It wasn’t the most riveting edition.

Just the concept of the cobbles had him intrigued I reckon.

I haven’t watched cycling in a few years. Question from someone who watched from the Lance Armstrong era, through many years of multiple top riders ending up with black marks on their names - How does someone solo win PR from 60kms out?

I used to love Fabian Cancellara who would be targetted by other teams whose tactics were simply to nullify him and remember him soloing from 40kms around 2010 thinking how amazing, what a beast. You could only admire him but I remember people suggesting he had a tiny engine powering him home.

A 60km solo… WOW.

I have no idea, but I feel PR and the cobbles make a huge difference. Chasers still need to get through all of the cobbled sectors where they don’t have the benefit of slipstream etc. and on top of that teams were completely shattered from 120kms out at least. The solo wasn’t going away from a normal peleton.

You could see a bit nearish the end where he got close to a kerb on the way out of a town bend, and went “what the hell am I doing? I’m three minutes ahead; the only way I can lose is my own mistake”.

The power of the peloton to chase down break-aways is neutered on cobbles.

Also, a few of the cars nearly killed cyclists today.

Since COVid there has been more aggressive racing and the race starts much earlier. Pogacar did a 80km break at Strade Bianche on his first race day so long breakaways are common.

Though Jaycos Walscheid could do well but he punctured in the first sector and his race was over.

Can’t underestimate the advances in technology and nutrition the last 10 or so years that have made the riders ride faster for longer. Especially the nutrition. All the podcasts I listen to and things I read online always mention how much nutrition has evolved and become a major tool teams are enhancing and using.

Also the fact the sport is blessed with a few generational cyclists atm. Mvdp, pog, Wout Van Aert

I mean I have no opinion, but it’s fair to say that cycling and “nutrition” have some history.

Bling stuffed up Amstel Gold. After it was apparent that MVP did not have the legs, he needed to follow Pidcock. It was similar in Brabantse Pijl, except he had no team support. Bling should have won his last two races.

Yeah, you could have laid money that this was one race too far for MVDP. Pidcock was the obvious other rider to follow.

Wiebes totally tossed away the win in the women’s race, celebrating too early and allowing Vos to pick her pocket.
Great ride from Jayco’s Gåskjenn to take 3rd.

That was a miracle ride by Gaskjenn and unlikely to be repeated. The womens team has spent time at altitude so i am i terested to see how they perform. Fleche mens race is wide open, while Vollering should win the womens race.

Horrifying crash from Chris Harper who’s been in wonderful form this year. O’Connor also went down but recovered. Tour de Alps

Chris has sustained superficial wounds and suffered a mild concussion. The Australian will now rest and recover, and follow the team’s concussion protocol.

She had another good ride at Fleche.

It was a disappointing ride by Garcia who in Prerace interview was concerned about the rain. In other news Paternoster and Manly to renew. Jayco is in the running for OConnor, although what S.Yates does will determine transfer strategy. Ewan is riding the Eichborn Classic three days before the Giro. De Marchi now confirmed for the Giro after his stage victory in the Tour of the Alps.
