The Pro Cycling Thread

37, rain, becoming heavy, thunderstorms tomorrow.

Thought there were some strange tactics at play today - Thomas should have been allowed to ride on, once Henao punctured before the final climb - I am surprised Orica didn’t have Impey as the second option with the new parcours, seeing Impey climbed better than Gerrans in 2016.

There is a chance the break-away could stay away tomorrow if the rain arrives.

GreenEDGE Cycling will launch a new team, to be called Mitchelton-SCOTT, in 2017.

The team will race on the UCI Continental circuit as a Chinese-registered outfit, and is the product of a collaboration by GreenEDGE Cycling with a number of parties, including the Chinese Cycling Association and Cycling Australia.

Competition Level: UCI Continental Team
Registered country: China
Project owner: GreenEDGE Cycling
Affiliated teams: ORICA-SCOTT (men and women)
Head Sport Director: James Victor
Chinese Adviser: Jingkan Shen
Australian Riders: Harrison Sweeney (QLD, 18) and Robert Stanndard (NSW, 18) – more to be named following Australian season performances.
Chinese Riders: Xue Chaobua (24), Qin Chenlu (24), Xue Fuwen (20), Liu Hao (28), Sun Xiaolong (22) and Bi Wenhui (23). Additional TBC.

Ewan crushes them in the sprint.
It was a pretty messy ending, a few going down just inside the final 3km. Ewan lost his lead-out and went with Sagan, which is always a good move, and he’s just a bit faster in the pure sprints at this stage of the season.

Interested that Orica’s CT team has mainly Chinese funding - Orica has been working hard in that region for a number of years.

Smart strategic move.

GreenEdge the cycling team manager, rather than Orica. Not sure that Orica the company has much to do with this. Michelton is headline sponsor - probably hoping to profit from huge growth in chinese wine purchases.

Don’t know much about DS James Victor, but apparently he is from AIS and is U23 road coach.

Posted around the time there must have been a plan when Orica signed Cheung Lok - Anyway Orica is kicking goals with the woman’s team coming under their umbrella and now a CT team,

Backstage Pass interactions between Ewan and White are starting to resemble his relationship with Matthews

It’s hamming it up for the cameras - Matthews had a healthy relationship with DS’s at Orica.

Ewan nailed that slightly uphill sprint - It’s his bread and butter.

Porte does it easy today, and wraps up the TdU assuming no massive misfortune.

Good effort by Haas to battle back up the climb after being dropped - Podium place is his too lose.

Ewan 4/4

Ewan next races at the Tour of Abu Dhabi - Expect one or two of the top group of sprinters to ride.

Now its seems apparent the TDU parcours fails climbers my guess is Orica will send one of the Yates for the 2018 edition.

13 WT teams are racing - I assume the same squads that will be riding Sunday’s Cadel Ocean Ride.

Orica team for the Cadel Evans RR

Gerrans
Chavez
Hepburn
Durbridge
Bewley
Howson
Docker

In

Hepburn
Bewley
Docker

Out

Ewan
Kluge
Impey

Ewan is riding the “Towards Zero” race, as he should.
Docker and Durbo are only doing the Cadel Great Ocean race. The others do both.

The TDF team will be interesting - We know that Chaves two preferred domestiques are Howson and Bewley.

So could the TDF Team look like this

Chaves
Yates x 1
Kreuzeger
Howson
Bewley
Impey
Durbridge
Gerrans

That leaves four riders for the mountains and of course Impey can do multiple roles - Bewley to be the motor - Durbridge and Gerrans to protect Chaves and Yates - Probably need one more rider for the wind - Could be Verona or Juul-Jensen - Doubt the team has options for stage wins in flatter type stages.
