The Pro Cycling Thread

OK in theory, but some cycling, like Strade Bianche, doesn’t seem to be FTA in any english speaking country.

Meanwhile SBS have posted what they are showing FTA this season - basically French/ASO but nothing RCS.

Same as last year.

Annemiek Van Vleuten dominates Strade Bianche - She’s quickly returned to form after her long term injury at the 2018 World’s - Wonder how much the ten day camp she did with the men’s team has helped her form - Concern over spratt who crashed out of the race.

Alaphillipe win the mens race, just too strong for Fugsland, Wout Van Aert rounded out the podium.

Paris Nice starts tonight.

Looks like Spratt is ok.

Alaphalippe is a gun and one of my favorite riders - You are the TDU organiser and if no Sagan, then you chase Alaphalippe - Good rides by Fuglsang and Van Aert - MS went about as expected - Durbridge just missed the first split and then it was curtains.

4 from 4 for quick step can they make it 5 from 5 tonight…ill be watching!

First stage of PN is pretty flat. QS haven’t brought their sprint team.

Groenewegen beats Ewan in the sprint; Michael Matthews crashed out, has concussion, but thankfully ok.
Winds caused havoc, and a number of GC riders missed the split.
Ewan did reasonably well given that he didn’t have a leadout train like Groenewegen.

Never seen a rider come past Groenewegen in the last 100 metres when he is leading and Ewan came close. Good ride by both who were always in the front split. Haig saved S.Yates bacon by bringing him back to the front group in the last 20kms. Gotta say that Bauer has been disappointing since joining MS.

Groenewegen wins again.
Wind and splits again. Yates not so lucky this time, lost 6m and his GC is done.
Haig got back to a very reduced group and is MS remaining GC contender.

Trentin has been super impressive the last two stages. He has comfortably been in each sprint. Have luck in the Classics and he could get a good result. Haig is riding well.

Bennett wins stage 3 from Ewan.
I suspect Trentin has been eying tonight’s stage.

jeredgruber on strade bianche:
“Moments like this in a super hectic bike race always surprise me. There’s so much stress and crazy, but when that lead group approaches, it seems calm and peaceful. It’s so orderly and smooth. They appear to float along as a giant colorful mass. Then they pass - the noise, the effort, the movements, the breathing - the mass breaks up into its rightful individual components. And right behind the leaders? It’s mayhem - riders dropped, riders chasing, mechanicals, cars everywhere, cars honking, a team car about to mechanical out of the race wheezing along, motos, dust. It’s wild. But in that moment right before the leaders pass - there’s a pause in the insanity - just for a second they float. It’s beautiful.”

Ewan’s team probably cost him the stage - When Rowe and Team Sky split the peleton in the last 4kms, Ewan was right on their wheel - Had Ewan had two team-mates to drive the SKY split, then the rest of the peleton would not have come back - Think Ewan is riding a touch better than last year and is worthy of a GT Start - Expect one or two sprinters could make the final today - The MS Conti team has risen from the ashes - Apparently they will ride an only Asian program - Chaves jnr returns and is joined by Oram from NZ while the rest of the squad is Chinese.

Did you guys see the spectactor walking in front of Bora Hansgrophe Team TT
took out 2 riders.

Yep

MS won the TTT, but also almost got taken out by a woman walking her dog.

Obviously crowd control wasn’t a priority at the TA

At the PN, Magnus Cort won stage 4 from a break that was never in danger of being caught.

That was an awesome performance by MS in the TTT, though surprised they beat Jumbo’s time. They were underestimated in this TTT, seeing they finished 2nd in this stage in 2018. It was a similar team, except no Impey and one less climber. They should do a strong TTT in the TDF.

And the breakaways best friend in Sky was again at the head of the peleton. I am concerned that MS used Haig at the front in the last 10km, when he should have been saving himself for the ITT. Doesnt help that Nieve fell bringing down Mezgec.Thats twice in the last week that MS has suffered multiple riders in a crash. They are playing with fire.

In a shock result, S.Yates wins the ITT stage at PN from Politt and Kwiatkowski - Haig was disappointing finishing 1m and 09s down but more importantly 25 seconds than Chaves - Haig is 8th on GC but if he rode a decent ITT he would be 4th on GC - Anyway MS can attack the final stages - Put two in the breakaway and one to support Haig, as you know Sky always give the breakaway a chance.

Alaphalippe wins stage of TA from GVA and Bettiol with A.Yates fifth and into the leaders jersey - I expect the top 3 will change little to the ITT, unless they sneak bonus seconds.

Bernal wins PN, Haig finished 4th, with a better ITT he could have given the podium a real shake.

As expected TA will come down to the ITT. Adam Yates extended his lead to 25 seconds after following Fugsland overnight. 25 seconds doesn’t sound enough to bet Rogic but we’ll see.
