The Professional Cycling Thread (from July 2024)

That is not the team. Da Pretto in and De Marchi out. It’s a solid team who will aim for a top 10 in GC and a stage win. Harper enters with one race day in 3 months. Team is a bit lopsided with many climber types, although they may be deployed sor stages. Women came third in the short TTT in stage one of the Vuelta. Actually, it was one of the weaker teams they have put out in a TTT.

Finally, Astana’s results are ridiculous. They are at a million races with an overall solid squad, yet, they perform ( so far ) day in and day out for the first four months of the season.

I may have missed the news but Caleb Ewan retired.

Sad news.

Interesting there has been no comment from Jayco Alula! And getting information from them on these type of issues is like getting blood out of a stone. I can say he was a hard taskmaster as a leader which did not make him popular with those riding around him. More will come out in time.

And in not surprising news for me, Matt White is leaving Jayco Alula as the head of the organisation. This decision has been brewing for months.

Plapp crashes again in an ITT. He’s wasting his career away with these sorts of accidents.
GreenEdge management must be getting pretty frustrated with this.

The worst thing is he was on the same time as Vine when he crashed. Its super frustrating. Anyway the team is performing well so far in the Giro with multiple riders making the final. Think they’ll get a stage win if the riders hold their form.

Have heard some media commentary around Ewan’s retirement and they only tell half the story. It’s an interesting career when you break contracts on two occasions and would have been three if Jayco did not stop it in 2018.

gee He is lucky, thought would do time for sure.

A tragic accident fueled by his well known anger issues.
It seems there was no criminal intent, just rage fuelled stupidity.

Two young children. Her parents wanted him to be there for them.

He said Dennis slowed down and Ms Hoskins got off the bonnet and continued walking next to the car, before opening the door while the car was still moving.

Judge Press said Dennis shut the door before accelerating the car in “what appears to be an attempt to drive away from her”.

Judge Press said it was “unbeknownst” to Dennis that Ms Hoskins had “held onto the car” as he accelerated down the street, and that Ms Hoskins then came off the vehicle.

“There is no allegation that you knew, or even contemplated, the likelihood that your wife was still running next to the car as you continued to drive down the street for only a matter of a second or two,” he said.

He said Dennis then immediately stopped the car and attended to his wife.

“You are not to be sentenced for causing the death of [Ms Hoskins], you are not charged with causing it,” he said.

Holy hell, that hourglass narrowing in stage four of the Giro… congrats to everyone for not dying.

It was likely that Dennis would receive a non-custodial sentence for the incident. In a perfect world this accident would never have happened.

DJR Richardson now realises that sprint finishes in the Giro can be sketchy. Heavy help us if there is rain today in the finale in Naples.

Been closely watching Jayco at the Giro. Zana and Boumann have deliberately lost time, although there form is fine. Double has been excellent as Harper’s bodyguard while Da pretto and Engelhardt are climbing surprisingly well. I doubt Plapp’s form while Hepburn will be busy in the next two weeks setting up breakaways. Lets see if Groenewegen can break his duck at Hungary. In saying that I don’t understand why Jayco did not bring a Berhe type for GC. Finally, it is hard to get any information about White’s dismissal. Jayco runs a tight ship, however, informationally will eventually enter the public domain.

Danny van Poppel has out sprinted Groenewegen 2/2 in Hungary, that tells you where his form is, not a great sign.

It was the same last year and after Hungary he turned his form around. One can hope.

My famous last words about Naples and rain resulted in carnage.
