I short listed about 8 songs out of this lot and honestly would have voted yes in normal DJ to probably 18 of them so great effort DJâs.
5 - Half Alive (loved the funky feel)
4 - Kovacs (Is this the next Bond Theme? Also reminds me Amy Winehouse a bit)
3 - Mojo Juju (Will be looking up more of his music)
2 - Feelies (With a nod to Led Zep for the Whole Lotta Love riff)
1 - B.B. King (Only 1 vote cause ya stole it outta my playlist ya mongrel)
Tribute came close because it is really a very well crafted song that ticks so many of the boxes that great songs have, but ultimately that is also itâs downfall. Great songs all round guys.
As others have noted, most of these exceeded 5 out of 10 (i.e. a pass mark). I think there were only 4 which I wouldâve rejected in normal DJ: 5 votes: Thelma Plum (hadnât heard it before and it had me checking her other stuff out⊠turns out sheâs a bit of a one-trick pony, but this is a neat track), 4 votes: Severed Heads (reminds me of times when the Triple J Hottest 100 was actually worth a squirt of â â â â âŠ), 3 votes: Ride (unexpected⊠this had an airiness and wasnât as heavy-handed as their stuff can often be), 2 votes: Guided by Voices (they get name-checked by a lot of my favourite artists⊠I must check out more their stuff), 1 vote: Mojo Juju (sparse, and had a certain something about it).
GBV have been very prolific. 32 albums since they started.
Interestingly, I think there first 10 years were very much part time. I think they had 30-40 musicians pass through the band during this stage. The singer Robert Pollard was a school teacher most of this time as well.
Early mid 90âs was when they started getting name dropped by âcoolâ bands.
Iâd start with Bee Thousand and Alien Lanes from the mid 90âs. Some other good albums through to the end of the 90âs. I lost track of them after thatâŠbut seeing them in NY in September this year so better get up to speed on the most recent 15 albums.
