i’ve been contemplating a related topic earlier this evening.

So much of my music experience through my 20s was “the local scene”, centred around the Punters Club, the Tote etc etc. At the time it felt like a community, but the reality was that in the great scheme of the world of music it was very isolated, and now, so many years later excluding the friends who I was there with, and mention of a band or a gig or whatever gets a completely blank expression. Even from those who have lived their whole life in Melbourne.

So I guess my thinking was whether in the current world, having access to a broader “community” across the world made up for the dilution of the local community

I don’t know what my point was…

It’s hard to know. A few of the bands I’ve wanted to check out have Instagram, but no website. Which is Farkin annoying for starters.

I think sitting around drinking beer would probably be a good place to start. After that, who knows?

Yeah, I’m just thinking all these bands seem desperate for a distinct Aussie identity they can put out to the world. In the 90s we were sharing tapes of US bands you couldn’t hear any other way and trying to be like them.

Pretty slow for a Saturday. Feel like I might’ve cleared the dance floor.

Off to bed, hopefully somethings happened overnight.

And to @mrjez question re starting a local rock or punk band, I think it would be just the same as 30 years ago. You’d have a bunch of like minded mates who liked the sound and you’d get out there and play.

If course the definition of success and the pursuit of an audience and selling yourself etc etc would all look very different, but starting a punk band in 2021 is surely no different to starting a punk band in 1991, it’s not like you’re creating some new local sound. You’re just playing music and bringing an energy and attitude and finding your niche.

Maybe I’m wrong, because I really have no idea, and my teenage daughter has been listening to some terrible teen pop punk all night (someone called noahfinnce), and there are no garages in apartment blocks and I’m not sure young people even really hang out in real life, so maybe you find a bass player in the internet who you never even meet on real life…

My kids are doing the right thing and jamming with mates in a clandestine location.

One of my eldest grandsons did an 8 minute version of “My Sharona” playing base on stage at a school show held in a private room at the local hotel. So if you want to start up a band give me a call, I’m his manager,.,., { he doesn’t know this yet}
