The Reigning Dj King (Mk XIII) is @nobody...it's Blonde DJ Time again with @mrjez being at his divisive best (Part 1)

Pfft…excuses, excuses

Haven’t had a chance to listen tonight, and now going to be unable to this evening (unless I get a few minutes at 3am). Expect late arvo for my votes if they’re not there when you wake up in the morning. @swoodley

Narrowed it down to ten.
I have strong feelings about 5 and 4…
I think.

Alright, before I even start…yes, I am aware that I’ve spent more time on this and given it far more consideration than any of the actual DJ’s.
I know. Shut up.

  1. Road To Nowhere - Talking Heads
Doesn’t matter how overplayed this is.
Easily the most complete song here. Can we talk dynamics?
From the gentle harmonies in the intro to the manic yelling at the end.
    The song actually speeds up.
In spite of the title, this is a song that takes you somewhere.

4 Orange Crush - REM
It’s the opening riff. And later, the backing vocals.
It really is the backing vocals.
There is something about that wail that is so…human. It’s that…hu-err.
All these years and I honestly have no idea what they’re literally singing about.
But it speaks to me off arrogance, ignorance, betrayal, hurt and loss.
I’m…just not getting that anywhere else here.
Also…when this song came out, it felt like a completely new type of music.
Been Caught Stealing did the same thing to me.

3 Manchild - Neneh Cherry
I’ve mentioned my personal connection to the song.
But bloody hell, it’s a good song.
Sonically…amazing.
Do yourself a favour and listen to this on Good speakers.
Also, I’m a Manchild so deal with it, other songs.

Now it gets difficult.
For not much benefit to the DJ’s. But.

  1. Sweet Jane - Cowboy Junkies

It’s just beautiful.

Last could have gone to five.

  1. Hungry Like The Wolf - Duran Duran
A little obvious for my liking, but undeniably a great and important song.

Apologies to Tricky, Casbah, Shadow, Nowhere, and anyone else who tried.

Alright, here goes. @swoodley

5 REM - Orange Crush
4 FNM - From Out of Nowhere
3 Sunny Boys - Happy Man
2 Talking Heads - Road to Nowhere
1 Sam Fox - Touch Me

Honestly that Sam Fox track is crap but she deserves a vote for almost singlehandedly dragging a young Azza into puberty. I remember those posters very well, @mrjez . PHWOAR!

Hahahahaha. Yep.

@Preliminary_Point2 was hoping you’d give my track a mention.

I’m playing BDJ bingo here, and I almost got a full card.

I’m cooked. No final for me.

5 votes. OMD - Enola Gay
4 votes. Sunnyboys - Happy Man
3 votes. Neneh Cherry - Manchild
2 votes. Billy Bragg - Levi Stubbs’ Tears
1 vote. Sam Fox - Touch Me

I mean, the Fox song is utter crap, but I remembered something. Many, many years ago I was in cubs & scouts. Between the myriad fundraising (raffles, lamington & snowball drives) we used to collect newspapers for recycling. Me and next door neighbour would traipse around the neighbourhood.
The bloke in number 2 was a grumpy old bugger who’d answer the door with can in hand, smoke in mouth, wearing a white singlet and footy shorts. His became our favourite house because he’d offload his copies of The Truth and Australian Post Magazine. These opened our eyes (literally) as they introduced us to the world of Sam Fox and Page 3 girls. Thanks for the mammaries!!

HM:
Oakey/Moroder - Electric Dreams.
Mainly because it reminds me of my ill-fated (and unadvisedly clad) train journey to Boronia Cinema to see the ghastly film on a double-date. As regaled in these parts… what a terrible day that was…

No, in a dash of karma some might say, he beat my entry to within an inch of its life, even though the tune was already hospitalised and on a life support machine.

Well, it’s circle of life in BDJ world. You’ve already fingered my track, so it’s symbiotic relationship

(Plus you were also on my bingo card!!)

My brother used to have a giant Samantha Fox poster on his bedroom wall.

Whenever he wasn’t home, me and my friend would sneak into his room, and just stare it for way too long.

Also, I’m actually a small outside chance in this round, which is annoying. It’s much more fun to get zero votes than ‘some.’

Is it that mobile phone type noise that comes in one verse?

5 Song 21 Philip Oakey & Giorgio Moroder - Together in Electric Dreams
We watched this at the school, and I was hoping to manouver myself into sitting next to the guy I had a crush on, who was due to move away the following month. I wanted to hold his hand and sing “We’ll always be togetherrrrrrr” to him. Yeah, that didn’t happen. And off he went. He ended up joining the army, and now lives in Darwin. Collingwood supporter anyway, no loss!

4 Song 22 Duran Duran - Hungry like the Wolf
I think it was Molly Meldrum who spun some tale that he’d visited them at the studio when they were recording this, and he arrived right as they were about to hit record. Simon Le Bon saw Molly and let out a giggle, and that’s why you hear that at the start of the song. Cool story bro!

3 Song 8 Rick Astley - Never Gonna Give You Up
End of year concert, my friend and I did a skit to Kylie songs. Instead of ‘Do the Locomotion’ it was ‘Use my suntan lotion’. ‘Got to be certain?’ no, ‘Got To Hang Curtains’. And ‘I Should Be So Lucky’ became ‘I Can Eat Souvlaki’, complete with the skeleton from the science lab as a prop, singing ‘My body’s close to starving, cos all this meat I’m carving…’. Annnnd right at the end, we drop the 45rpm down to 33rpm, which of course made Kylie sound like Rick Astley, and we started doing the patented Rick Astley bent arm shuffle dance.

2 Song 9 Sam Fox - Touch Me
My bro had Sam’s album on tape. And he played it ad nauseum. There were actually some quite catchy tunes on there, with top class lyrics…
Suzie, can’t you see
He’s been making eyes at me
Something happened late last night
And he’s not thinking of you
Don’t leave me with your boyfriend
Great stuff!

1 Song 16 Boys Boys Boys - Sabrina
The usual wake up at 6am on a Saturday morning to sit poised with the remote ready to record our fave songs at the time from the RAGE top 40. The Sabrina filmclip was a particular fave. I can’t imagine why. Or why the tape got worn out in certain spots where it got played again and again trying to catch that illusive glimpse of a gasp nipple!!

Sam and Sabrina did team up together to do a song in 2010. For your viewing pleasure:

2 Electric Dreams

1 Moonlight Shadow

I confess, i hardly listened passed the opening few seconds of each song. The only way I can rationalise how anyone can enjoy 80s music is Irony. I coulda voted for any of em.

My cousin had a Samantha Fox poster in his room. It was the greatest thing Id ever seen up to that point.

I was supposed to be back at work today, but Im home with one of the Puppatrons. She vomitted before. I assume its because she heard some of these tracks getting skimmed threw.
