At least two by my reckoning…
And a fair few Glockenspiels/Marimbas masquerading as Xylophones…
My ears tell me The Sorcerers is flute… tick for the other two instruments though.

It wasn’t a same family tone or octave subtlety though, it was just… not there?
Yeah I thought that

Weird round. To me there were lots that were worthy of 2-3 votes, nothing really deserving the full 5. But somebody had to get it.
5 - Siouxsie and the Banshees - Hong Kong Garden
4 - Les Claypool - One better
3 - Beastie Boys - Girls
2 - Sufjan Stevens - Chicago
1 - Frank Zappa - St Alfonso’s simple breakfast
There was one song in the round that I would have normally given the 5 to, however when I tried to submit it myself I was informed that:
A.) It had already been submitted
B.) It was actually a glockenspiel.
I dunno, I can’t tell the difference. And after being a bit lippy last round, i appreciate the irony that I’m heading for my first ever Swoodley. And fair enough too, I wouldn’t have voted for my song either!
Yeah, I still can’t tell.
5 Siouxsie and the Banshees - Hong Kong Garden
4 Pink Floyd - Set the controls to the heart of the sun
3 Radiohead - No Surprises
2 Psychedelic Furs - Love my way
1 The Clash - Washington Bullets
That was a pretty reasonable set on the whole. Not too many standouts, but equally not too much dross… I did wonder whether to drag Gotye out again for the occasion… the way my song’s polling, I should have.
Big flashbacks to the late 80’s/early 90’s, when I was getting dragged to gigs by a girl I was keen on, so had to convince her that I really, really did like Frente and The Killjoys. Thankfully, it was worth it…
There were so many songs to rule out for not (technically) meeting the brief, that in the end I just thought “f**k it, near enough is close enough”… as long it was something from the same family… Even still, there were a couple where I remain perplexed whether there is anything even closely resembling XVR…
@hambo
5 votes Mr Bungle - Goodbye Sober Day
4 votes The Beatles - Fool On The Hill
3 votes Psychedelic Furs - Love My Way
2 votes Siouxsie & The Banshees - Hong Kong Garden
1 vote Sufjan Stevens - Chicago
Haha, the “B” added on
Interesting round;
5 - Mr Bungle - Goodbye Sober Day
4 - The Clash - Washington Bullets
3 - Frank Zappa - St Alfonso’s simple breakfast
2 - Sorcerers - In search of the lost city of the Monkey God
1 - Siouxsie and the Banshees - Hong Kong Garden
call it out. There’s definitely one. Can’t have a synth playing whatever it was.
There was a track in round one that I still cant work out. Zero pizza reference in the song title, in the artist name, in the cover art and the song was an instrumental.
Good round. I had expectations of deep cut Blue Note vibraphone albums coming up, but either way, mostly enjoyed it.
5 - Flying Home - Lionel Hampton. I just really enjoyed watching it to be honest and it fit the brief in its purest form.
4 - Mr Bungle - Goodbye Sober Day
3 - Set The Controls For the Heart of The Sun - Pink Floyd. A young band finding its feet in the wake of its chief song writer going completely bananas. This would in some way be the rough sketch of what they become. Still so great.
2 - The Good The Bad The Ugly - My favourite movie of all time. Gotta give it votes.
1 - Fool on The Hill - The Beatle. Never really been a fan of this song, but definitely from my favourite beatle era.

I know why the DJ chose that song in good faith, and it’s funny in a couple of ways. Not a synth thing.
The general vibe is that glockenspiels and marimbas fit the brief because we often can’t tell the difference but that 4 or so of us can hear flute in the Sorcerers song.
I hear flute too, maybe a rarely seen bass flute (got to about grade 2 in flute)
You’re all nerds
Everyone knows Jazz Flute is where it’s at!
