Would have thought they would keep in JD and drop Carlisle instead.

Would have been my preference, JD hasn't been bad and could have been more dangerous given the ins.
That said I hope Carlisle has a blinder and kicks 11 before grabbing dusty by the collar and shaking him like a Polaroid picture.
I think the 2 key forwards plus resting ruckman will work, but I guess we'll have to wait and see.
This is the issue for me. I think long term that the structure of having two key forwards, and a resting ruckman, is the way to go. Unfortunately we haven't really had a chance to see it so far this year.

We've had two chances, however the coaches have decided it is better to start a key forward as a sub and then follow it up with dropping the better of the two key forwards.

Just relax Rosso.
JD going back to VFL was always on the cards for this game.
Clearly, we were 1 tall too many, and playing 1 as the SUB is not ideal.
Out of all our tall forward options, JD has probably played the most this season, and has the least mature body out of all of them.
Ambrose missed a chunk of games, and needs to play.
Ditto Belly.
Even Carlisle started as SUB last time, thus only played about 40 mins.
I'm supremely confident that JD will be recalled against GWS, and someone else will be rotated.
I know you are counting JD but he is much more of a forward than a ruckman. Hille, Ryder and TBC are ruckmen who can go forward; JD is a forward who is tall. Around the ground JD is/will be valuable as he reads the play well, good footy brain and very athletic. We won't as top heavy as we were with Hille, TBC and Ryder with JD instead.

I posted at the same time you did so I won't repeat it, mainly because my post is hard to read.
In summary, JD Ryder and TBC won't be as top heavy as the "3 ruckmen" mentality we had when Hird first started. JD can spend 95% of the game at FF with Ryder and TBC rotating through the ruck.
We could kick anything from 9 to 20 goals given our recent form and the team we have on paper. I know it's not all about goals but the point is that I don't know what to expect. Will we see the team we love wake up and put a couple of nails in Richmond's coffin???
There is allot of brad ottens in the way bomber is handling carlisle, slowly teaching and endlessly backing him in in spite of a media frenzy.
I don't know anything about Ottens' history, but I was thinking about how Bomber keeps backing Carlisle.
He's demanding a lot of him, and Carlisle hasn't been performing, but Bomber has backed Carlisle over Daniher when the decision had to be made. If at any stage Carlisle has though "Bomber hates me", his selection this week will confirm that's not true.
This show of faith should do wonders for Carlisle, but it will add a fair bit of pressure too knowing that you were picked over another bloke who is missing out.
Personally I think Carlisle just needs a bit of luck. He needs the rest of the team to give him good delivery, he needs the umps to pay him some frees when they are there, and he needs a couple of kicks to wobble through. Even if we could get say 4 goals in front with 10 mins to go and then Carlisle kick a couple of goals in junk time - it would be great for his confidence going into the next round.
Also, Belly could be a smarter forward than Carlisle and keep out of his way (better than Daniher). It will be interesting if Carlisle and Belly make a good combo - Daniher might not come back in for a while...
