That’s unfair. He got to the top 10 by beating players ranked below him and some ranked above him as well. He lost this one to no. 34, aged only 19, which tells me no. 34 is very good and will go higher.

I can’t believe De Minaur lost to another unseeded opponent

Swiatek, Sabalenka and Rybakina push each other to women’s tennis dominance

If there were any lingering doubts about the 2024 clique in the elite of women’s tennis, Iga Swiatek, Aryna Sabalenka and Elena Rybakina have erased them in the past three weeks.

It’s a couple of days since Swiatek and Sabalenka produced one of the sport’s great matches on Saturday evening, in the final of the Madrid Open.

Swiatek’s 9-7 triumph in a third-set tiebreak left the world No 1 flat on her back on the red clay of the Caja Magica. It left Sabalenka, the world No 2, slumped in her chair, a towel over her head and face, the very recent memory of three championship points running through her brain.

She hadn’t lost them. Swiatek had mercilessly taken them from her.

This was two days after Sabalenka had toppled Rybakina in a semi-final duel, in another third-set tiebreak that required 12 points for the Belarusian to complete her grinding comeback, 1-6, 7-5, 7-6(5). And it was two weeks after Rybakina had knocked out Swiatek in a semi-final in Stuttgart that also went three sets — at a tournament Swiatek has owned for two years.

Dominic Thiem about to announce his retirement at just 30 years of age. Will apparently finish up at the end of the year in a tournament in Austria.

Interesting career. Won a US Open (his first Grand Slam win) and basically didn’t fire a single shot since. Partly due to injury of course - mainly his wrist. Some parallels to Del Potro in that respect actually.

That’s sad. I liked both players and it’s unfortunate their careers never took off after their slam win.

Closer to entirely, I reckon.

Largely but he has also spoken openly at length about losing his motivation and feeling empty after he reached the summit by winning the slam.

Camila Giorgi has also retired

Apparently she played tennis

Yeah she’s never been afraid to get the rig out. If you looked at her insta you’d leave with the impression she’s a model not a tennis player

She was also in the spotlight a couple of years back during COVID when there was some suggestion she had a Doctor certify that she had the jab when in fact she hadn’t

Maybe they need concussion protocols for tennis
