The Thin Ice Brigade

Thinking about the players who need to have a good season to stay on the list for 2027.

Elijah Tsatas

Jade Gresham

Nik Cox

Archie Perkins

Jaxon Prior

Archer May

Matt Guelfi

Rhys Unwin

Saad El-Hawli

Archer Day-Wicks

Tom Edwards

Lachy Blakiston

Liam McMahon

Some of these are at the end of their contract. Some just benefited from “give them a chance”.

Some might be contracted past the end of this year. We’ll bleed if Dodoro did a Shiel and gave Gresham a longer contract than admitted to.

Obviously not all of them will be cut, but surely more than this year.

Do we need to do this now? It’s a time to be positive about our new draftees etc. The rest will play out in time.

I opened this thread wondering whether

alex
bullD
nino
ewok

were on the list. FWIW, I’d punt all of the above.

As with the playing list, there is a whole lotta underperforming deadwood.

Man that guy is annoying.

How cringe are those ewok gifs

Funny timing. I just looked up who’s OOC, and I got the list:

Angus Clarke
Archer Day-Wicks
Archie May
Archie Perkins
Elijah Tsatas
Jade Gresham
Jaxon Prior
Jayden Nguyen
Kayle Gerreyn
Lachlan Blakiston
Liam McMahon
Matt Guelfi
Lewis Hayes
Nikolas Cox
Rhys Unwin
Saad El-Hawli
Tom Edwards
Zak Johnson
I think the only two that are categorically safe are Clarke and probably Johnson. Gerreyn would probably get another mandatory “he’s a KPF” one year extension too.

Of the rest:

Already gone:
Gresham
Guelf

Competing for one spot
May
Edwards
McMahon

Competing for one spot
Hayes
Blaki

Each 50/50, battling themselves, depends how their season goes
Cox
Tsatas
Perkins
Prior

Probably unlikely, say persist with one of
SEH
Unwin

Balance of probabilities get persisted with:
Nguyen
Gerreyn
ADW

That gets me to 8ish delistings without trying, and could very well be more.

I know it’s unpopular, but I think one of Guelfi or Gresham could well be on the list in 2027 if they have even a mediocre 2026 (no major injuries, play at their 2024 level). Our small forward stocks are absolutely dire in both quality and quantity, and we haven’t done anything to improve either. If we draft a legitimate small forward tonight with 36 and add El Achkar that changes things (or of course do some trading/FA moves next year). But right now one or both of those guys probably gets picked every week next year, and it wouldn’t be that hard for them to make a case for a spot in 2027.

If either, then Guelfi - at least he has played good footy.

And for some others, eg Archie Perkins, point out to him how he desperately needs a good season, or it’s scrapheap - HERE I COME!

If we’d drafted Taylor, then I’d have wondered if Hayes would be kept, but we still need those reserves.

I can see it with Guelfi.

I can’t with Gresh, I think we would have moved him on this year if we could, and not just for on-field reasons…

Yeah, I’d agree with that.

That’s a good number to have. Another cutting of the “not good enough for what we want/need”, combined with a strong draft hand in 2026, will have the list in decent shape and Rosa’s major stamp on it.

Sadly Harrison Jones is not on this list because of a bloody 2 year contract extension.

Blakiston was recruited as a ruckman.

I can’t even begin to categorise Unwin. Three games in total?

Go ewok, go berok.

I’m just going on balance of probabilities, late pick, suspect kicking, these guys often last 2 years and get cycled through.

Very harsh. I don’t get the hate he cops
