If I go for a run, walk or ride I’d say on average there is a snake every 10km I cover.

If there is water and/or food nearby, just assume there are snakes.
That said, went to tie up a boat over new years and as I reached out to grab a branch a red bellied black snake slithered right across it. Did not see it until the very last second and pulled my hand away. It did not give the slightest of ■■■■■, just kept going on its way.

Any bush walking on the outskirts of a metro area or further out, I’d just tell anyone/everyone to wear Gaiters, have a snake bandage in your backpack, and learn how to apply it properly (plenty of YT clips on this).
Sure, the odds of being bitten are extremely low.
The consequences if you are one of the unlucky few are pretty serious given the venom toxicity of Browns & Tigers, particularly if you have little knowledge of correct First Aid treatment for a snake bite.

I remember going for a hike at the You Yangs around 2013-ish.
My son was 9-10yo at the time.
Vividly recall having a conversation with him in the car about snakes, and that there was a good chance we would encounter one.
I just wanted him to be attentive.
Anyhow, we began our walk and 10mins in we were ascending so I had him just in front of me so I could keep an eye on him (probably a mistake in hindsight).
Problem with most snakes, at any sort of distance outside of 2-3 metres, they all look like sticks until they move.
I didn’t catch on we had a snake on the trail until my son’s leg was within touching distance of it.
I let out a sound which alerted my son to the danger.
He never saw the snake but could easily have stepped on it.
Thank goodness he didn’t and the snake slithered away once disturbed by our sudden movement.
I’m pretty sure it was a Brown.
Fkn scary and I’ve been ultra cautious ever since.

Good bandage application buys you hours. It’s absolutely something anyone doing bushwalking or fishing (or any activity where you may come across snakes) need to know.

I saw a snake in a storm water pit while walking along the Yarra in Collingwood.
Was there a sign on the pit?

When I first started running I did mostly trail running and used to run with a club that organised runs all over Sydney and the Blue Mountains and during runs you would regularly hear calls from people up ahead of “Snake!”. But what was worse, way worse, was when you heard those calls coming from behind.

Have traded in my feet for wheels, and because I’m cheap I’m shooting for Cape Conran (140km) in a single day.

From where ? Back a half a hundred years ago, we used to dive off Cape Conan, and catch crabs and collect abalone . As I recall the roads we poor, hope they have improved.

Rail trail from Bairnsdale to Orbost.
Road(s) from Orbost to Marlo then Marlo to Conran are good (better than the Princes Hwy in East Gippsland lol).
By all reports coming the other way (from Bemm River) they’re basically 4WD tracks but haven’t eyeballed them myself.
Update: have made it to Marlo pub for dinner then will trundle along the walking tracks to Conran

How did the bike trip eventually go.
Good. Currently in Bruthen about to start the home leg to Paynesville.
Bike has taken a bit of a battering and I can’t get into a few gears + lost my valve cap in the grass at Orbost but otherwise no complaints!
Even bumped into a lad in Nowa Nowa whose partner hosts bike packers.
