It looked like this one; which is a tasmanian copperhead

Well that was what the snake looked like and its owner said it was a tasmanian copperhead. I always wondered if it came to Melbourne on a plane.
A snake on a plane you say…?
Image search says yes a Copperhead,… but from about as far away from Tassie as you can get.

Wow, I was sure that he said it came from Tassie. Wonder how it got here; guess it was a very long time ago, maybe border control didn’t care.
Maybe he said Pennsylvania, (Eastern Nth America) and you conflated it over the years??
Can’t go wrong with any of them.
I’ve done the multiday hikes Milford, Routeburn, Kepler & Hollyford.
All brilliant in their own ways.
Kepler is a nice hike with nice views of the lakes around Te Anau and has a pretty spectacular ridge walk with the bonus that you can start the walk without transport from the DOC at Te Anau.
Hollyford is a bit more remote than the others and you get the bonus of a Flight over Milford Sound to start with. You don’t get the views like the others as your mainly tracking the hollyford river, but it does feel more remote.
Milford deserves its iconic status, after a short first day with a boat trip to the track start, it has a great variety of river walks, waterfalls, side trips & views from high.
My favourite was Routeburn, just spectacular all the way, beautiful rivers, wateralls, views of mountain ranges from above, and brilliant hut locations.
You could do an overnight at Routeburn or Kepler, by just going to the first hut & back.
Theres some nice hikes around Wanaka too.
Hollyford I think is still closed from the floods/mudslides they had this year.
I had never got around to going to Mt Buffalo before today. It is stunning. And Lake Catani is great fun for swimming (or paddling) on a hot day.

i’m heading off to the grampians tomorrow, i remember someone in here saying they went there a bit.
what would be he best spots to go to ?
Depends on fitness level and what you like. I mostly look for longer day-hikes.
The Pinnacle is a classic, but it can sometimes have a few more people than I’d personally prefer. I normally do the ~9km walk starting at the back of the caravan park, up to wonderland carpark via Venus Baths, then to the pinnacle, then down to Hall’s Gap by the direct route. But if you’re not up for that you can just drive to wonderland carpark and do about a 5km return version. Note that a while ago some of the best bits of this walk around the Grand Canyon were out of commission due to bridge repairs, not sure if that’s still the case.
Other good ones are the Stapylton Loop and Briggs Bluff (both in the 10km range and fairly strenuous and bordering on rock-climby in places). Hollow Mountain is similar but shorter, about 3km return. Make sure to actually climb up inside the mountain if you do this one. Hollow Mountain and Stapylton are both way up the north end of the mountains though, it’s a fair drive if you’re staying in Hall’s Gap or Dunkeld. If you want to go a bit more hardcore, Briggs Bluff then continue on to Mt Difficult and return is north of 20km and will test you out. Mt Rosea is another one in the 10km range, but has a bit less of the scrambling and climbing. Great views from the peak though.
Recommend you drop into the tourist info centre in Hall’s Gap when you get there, they’ll be able to tell you what trails are closed (there’s ALWAYS some…) and i think they still sell maps there too.
I always use this website. Just click on Grampians and it will give you all the different hikes with short/half day/ full day/ multi day hikes.
Let’s us know if there is any your thinking of doing, as I’ve done most of them.
Edit:
Mt. Abrupt & Mt. Sturgeon are my 2 favourites, they are tough 3-4 hour hikes but stunning views. They’re also abit quieter on tourists, as they’re on Southern end of the Grampians.
Did this one just over a week ago (ended up being Labour day weekend - so lots of people - most seemed to do an overnight near Federation Hut. Easy walk - just long for a day trip. Great views.
Only just discovered this thread !!
If you are up for an epic hike, Stewart Island New Zealand. Rakiura North West circuit is super tough but amazing. 10 or 11 days. Did it in 2016, anti clockwise. we had a food drop onto Mason beach after day 7. Hardy will see a soul and the landscape is primeval New Zealand. Almost guaranteed to see kiwis. There are huts for each night. Some such as Long Harry Hut are perched overlooking the sea.
Sounds great. There’s some companies I take it that you can pay to do your food drops or did you organise someone in your party to do it for you?
What I like about the idea of NZ is ample water
Just a company out of invercargill airport. Only cost us abot $80.00 NZ from memory. We packaged everything up in garbage bags ets and they placed in the dunes. Their planes land on Mason beach
having looked at @jonovdp link that he posted, the 5 km one seems about right for me
i have no gauge of what i can and can’t do until i try it (went for a walk around the back of bacchus marsh and though she’ll be right it doesn’t seem long, 4 hours later after steep incline and decline and no maps or any real guides as to where i’m going I somehow made it back to the care).
I’ll give that a go as while i’m up there plan to go see this pink lake thingy near dimboola also.
thanks for the advice/help from both of you
Got abit itchy for a hike, and made the most of day off…… especially after @darkknightpheonix was looking for hikes in Grampians.
So made the trip to my favourite hike in Southern Grampians at Mt. Sturgeon.
