Pell and other allegations

EAD Andrew Bolt

Bolt and Pell are both chummy with the IPA. Hardly surprising Bolty was defending him.

Institute of Public Accountants? India Pale Ale? International Phonetic Alphabet?

Are you joking?

Did you have to ask??

Did you have to ask??

Di… oh, nevermind.

Hmmm.
Sorry, on my phone, cut and paste is a pain in the ■■■■.

Pell comes under fire from sex abuse groups

By Kelly Burke, Religious Affairs Writer
July 29 2002

Sydney’s Catholic Archbishop, the Most Rev George Pell, has attracted international criticism and come under strident attack from local sex abuse victims’ support groups, after his apparent assertion at the World Youth Day that abortion was a greater crime than pedophilia perpetrated by priests.

“Ghastly, insensitive and appalling,” is how child protection advocate Hetty Johnston last night described Dr Pell’s comments, delivered to 500 young Catholics at the Pope’s
international youth gathering in Toronto.

According to Canada’s national newspaper, The Globe and Mail, Dr Pell told his audience of World Youth Day delegates that “abortion is a worse moral scandal than priests sexually abusing young people”, during a public religious instruction session last week. The statement allegedly came in response to a question from a Kentucky youth minister, Greg Rickert, who had asked Dr Pell what Catholics should say when asked about the sex abuse crisis in the US Catholic church.

The newspaper reported that Mr Rickert sought clarification from Dr Pell over his statement, to which the archbishop replied: “Because [abortion] is always a destruction of human life.”

Dr Pell then insisted his comments were not designed to downplay sexual abuse; he was merely trying to point out that sex abuse by Catholic clergy had attracted attention to the detriment of other issues.

Dr Pell’s comments prompted the Mail’s religion and ethics reporter, Michael Valpy, to quote the archbishop’s critics, who have dubbed him “the Pell Pot of Australian Catholicism”.

Dr Pell could not be contacted by the Herald yesterday.

The Melbourne-based victims’ support group, Broken Rites, said last night it was hypocritical for the Catholic Church to show concern for the welfare of unborn children while demonstrating scant regard for the child victims of sex abuse by clergy.

Broken Rites had even received a number of complaints by victims of predatory priests who had pressured their victims into having an abortion to avert public scandal, the organisation’s president, Chris MacIsaac, said.

Ms Johnston said:

“The church just doesn’t understand the seriousness of the whole issue of sexual abuse of children … children’s lives are still being sacrificed in the name of the church’s ignorance.”

Thanks WP.

Did he fly to Canada?

Pell is sick, sicker than l thought. His moral compass is seriously skewed.

Ridsdale? Pell supporting him at his trial?

Yep. Back in the 90’s. What a guy.

Come on you leftie commie pinko.
Who knew back then that mercilessly buggering random children was the wrong thing to do.

It was a different time!

So Pell has written to the police to ask for an enquiry into the leaks that happened regarding him, especially considering they have never told him of the investigation or allegations against him and he only found out in the paper.

I am no fan of Pell however I have to say that was pretty bad. There is far too much leaking from Government agencies these days, far too many co-ordinated PR leaks. It is a major concern and something that needs to be addressed.

Did he fly to Canada?

Look at the date of the article.

Police have always been too politicised - Stuff only find it to the media because its leaked by the Police - Different rules apply to this branch of the public service.

All that needs to be known.

He’s quoted as saying he felt sorry for him too. Not the smartest statement to make for a church leader.

Fascinating thread and a brilliant sum up by Saladin.

That article just confirms the churches position on child rape. Deflect, deflect deflect!!!

Make the discussion about something else, something totally irrelevant. Abortion is a perfect choice.

I just hope a few scared people find the courage to tell all.

This article horrifies me both for its brutality and the attitude of the Catholic Church unbelievable.

sorry bad link

The victims will be allowed to sit in a conference room to view his testimony in Rome - better than nothing I suppose.

Wonder if the VicPol stuff will come up…

Why are surprised that Churches will protect their own - All institutions are a microcosm of society - All institions protect their own - Yet society as a whole still support these institutes - Maybe society needs to reflect on their values.

If that is true then why didn’t EFC protect the 34.

Let’s stick together
