Read the four original verses and tell me what you think
I
Australia’s sons let us rejoice,
For we are young and free;
We’ve golden soil and wealth for toil,
Our home is girt by sea;
Our land abounds in nature’s gifts
Of beauty rich and rare;
In history’s page, let every stage
Advance Australia fair.
In joyful strains let us sing,
Advance, Australia fair.
II
When gallant Cook from Albion sail’d,
To trace wide oceans o’er,
True British courage bore him on,
Til he landed on our shore.
Then here he raised Old England’s flag,
The standard of the brave;
“With all her faults we love her still”
“Britannia rules the wave.”
In joyful strains then let us sing,
Advance, Australia fair.
III
While other nations of the globe
Behold us from afar,
We’ll rise to high renown and shine
Like our glorious southern star;
From England soil and Fatherland,
Scotia and Erin fair,
Let all combine with heart and hand
To advance Australia fair.
In joyful strains then let us sing
Advance, Australia fair.
IV
Should foreign foe e’er sight our coast,
Or dare a foot to land,
We’ll rouse to arms like sires of yore,
To guard our native strand;
Britannia then shall surely know,
Though oceans roll between,
Her sons in fair Australia’s land
Still keep their courage green.
In joyful strains then let us sing
Advance Australia fair.
You better be joking
Pretty interesting words.
I am not surprised they are not used now
My daughter always sang that line as:
“We’ve got wealth for toys”
Which, to be fair, is a pretty accurate summation of the country.
Forget the guvment, blame the Boy Scouts:
I’d trust a Boy Scout kid more than the government.
As an individual with the blood of Erin in my veins, they can absolutely get farked sideways for their little shout out.
Like yeah, I’m sure those folks were real pleased to be there.

Yep, when I found those original verses, I wondered if my Irish Mum knew them as a kid. I suppose it was not really a well known song until it was made a National Anthem in 1974 and then again in 1984. Another black mark I can pin on Hawkie and Gough.
Think I voted for “Whatever Happened to the Revolution?” By Skyhooks
Goanna’s Solid Rock would have been good too
Innerbloom by Rufus du sol has got to be worth a crack.
I do not know ANYONE who voted for that. Do you? Of course I voted against the royalist dirge but at the time I recall no popular support for AAF so don’t understand how it got up.
I’d vote for Waltzing Matilda if I had the opportunity.
There actually wasn’t really a vote as I recall in my dim memory. So I googled it.
The 1974 public opinion poll
In February 1974 the Australian Bureau of Statistics held a public opinion poll to determine the relative popularity of the three ‘unofficial’ Australian songs: Advance Australia Fair, Waltzing Matilda and Song of Australia. Just over half of the 60 000 people sampled preferred Advance Australia Fair (51.4 per cent), followed by Waltzing Matilda (19.6 per cent). Using this result Prime Minister Whitlam announced to Parliament on 8 April 1974 that Advance Australia Fair had been chosen by the people of Australia as the new national anthem (but God Save the Queen would be retained for all regal occasions).
In 1976 the incoming government of Malcolm Fraser reinstated God Save the Queen as the ‘national anthem’ to be played on all regal and vice-regal occasions but provided that for civilian events, any of the four songs could be used.
The 1977 plebiscite
Another poll to select a tune for a national song was conducted in May 1977. Fuelled by debate in 1976 over an appropriate song to represent Australia at the Montreal Olympic Games, the Fraser government requested the Australian Electoral Office hold a direct national poll in conjunction with a set of constitutional referenda. Over 7 million of the 8.4 million people on the electoral roll chose to vote. Again, Advance Australia Fair was the preferred song, followed by Waltzing Matilda, God Save the Queen and Song of Australia.
Even after the plebiscite, a further seven years and a change of government passed before Advance Australia Fair was proclaimed as Australia’s national anthem.
Actually these days I like the version floating around of “We are Australian”, especially ones with native language. Reckon we would all bellow that out at G before we win the GF this year.
